MYSTERY TRAMP
VISIT TO THE AVOCA DISTRICT About 300 persons took part yesterday in the fifth of the railway department's mystery tramping excursions of this year, through the mountainous country in the Avoca district. The weather was all that could be desired, and many magnificent views were obtained from points along the route taken by the trampers. Going to the western side of the railway, the route led in a fairly steep climb to the plateau overlooking the Broken river. Then the trampers descended the river, where is an old coal mine that has been on fire for many years. After a further tramp lunch was taken at the site of the old Avoca mine, and this was followed by community singing led by the Hiking Troubadours. The walk from the mine to Avoca on the return journey was through native bush. The walk took the party through the property of Mr John Kidd. The next mystery tramping excursion will be held on October 8.
