The most spectacular bout ot the evening was the Una! of tho heavy-weight between L».i!«r (Marlborough/ and Lindeaay, who, tnoiigh bi'xing ior Auckland, is a naval rating. Both stood in the centre of the ring most of the time trading blow for blo>v, and had the crowd wild with excitement, especially when the judges announced the verdict in favour of the local man, although it must have been by a very narrow margin. in the bantam-weight Williams (Auckland) d.-feated larscn (Wellington) in a Croat mill, in which tho former's Btrength turned the scales. In the last round Lareen was down lor six, but came again and finished full of fight. lioguski (Taranaki) yielded the middleweight title to Neal (Auckland), after a rather dreary exhibition, in which the Aucklaiidr-i nicely shaded his opponent. Neither is a scientific '"oxer. The light-heavy-weight final was a great fight, in which Bell was always a trills ahead on points. His opponent hardly knew how to handle him, us he had some stagey and rinjj tricks up his sleeve A Narrow Win. ('. Itayner brought Marlborough the second chain} ioiisliip in annexing the ieulkorttilo from Ilawes, but there was not much in it, and many in tho crowd would not have been surprised if the verdict hud gone tho other way. A really unpopular verdict was that in which McKay (Gisborno) got the decision in, the fly-weight over Gordon (Taranaki), for although tiie winner was more lugged, Cordon seemed to do most oi the work. The judges were probably impressed with McKay's clean hitting. W. Francis (Otago) and E. Purdie (Auckland) fought a very close thing in tho light-hevny-weight. and tho decision in the Aucklander'a favour was not received with universal approval. However, he showed more finish than his opponent, who robed largely on an obvious superiority in strength. W. Puidio and Candy put up a nice exhibition in the welter-weight final, but the Aucklandcr was always a shade ahead on points. Tiio tournament, was a great success from all points of view, and there wore packed audiences throughout. To-day the visitors left on an excursion io tho Marlborough Sounds in delightful weather.

PROFESSIONAL AND AMATEUR BOUTS

If good material counts for anything the professional and amateur bouts tomorrow night, at the Caledonian Hall under the control of the Christchurch Sports Club, should be one of the best seen here for some years. The big event of the evening will be the match be-

tween Joe Franklin, of Gisborne and Percy Hawes, the local fast and hardiiitting feather-weight, who last season

in the amateur ranks won the New Zealand championship at his weight. This season he has stepped into the professional ranks, in which he scored his tirst victory recently. To-morrow night he will meet one of similar calibre, who, out of 104 bouts, won 92, and drew in 5. As their credentials are~a"sout equal, and both are fast boxers, there should be thriUs from gong to gong. The bout will be of 12 three-minute rounds, and will be preceded by several first class amateur bouts between boxers from H.M.A.S. Canberra, and the best amateurs of Canterbury. The team from the Canberra includes the heavyweight amateur champion of New South Wales, and a fly-weight with the South Australian and Tasmanian amateur titles to his credit. With such a programme there should be a full house. Doors will open at 7 p.m., and the first bout will begin at 8 o'clock. All tickets are now obtainable at Lange's, United Service Buildings, where reserves may be made.
