LYTTELTON NEWS

SCHOOL FAIR * A procession of children and adults in fancy costume and on decorated vehicles in the afternoon, and community dancing in the evening on Saturday brought to a close the fair in aid of the funds of the Lyttelton District High School. There was a very, large attendance of the public in the afternoon, but a much smaller attendance in the evening. The procession, which proceeded' round the main streets, was headed by the Lyttelton Marine Band. Children in fancy costumes and with decorated push-chairs and tricycles followed, and then adults. There were many clever and striking costumes. The fire brigade's motor, manned by tirewomen, was followed by a small clan of bewhiskered Highlanders. There were eight entries in the vehicular section. H.M.S. "Cant Berra," in, which the Municipal Electricity Department's truck was completely transformed, was cleverly done. "St. James' Theatre" was shown on a truck by a party of senior boys and in a wrestling ring of small dimensions "Johnnie" Walker and "Whiskers" Blake carried on a certain amount of unpleasantness, while "Mr Keg" refereed.

The Canterbury Yacht and Motor Boat Club was represented by a Takapuna boat, with a crew of girls. Unfortunately the mast of the boat carried away an overhead power line in Winchester street, but a landing party from H.M.S. "Cant Berra" was quickly on the job and repairs were effected. A "jazz" band, with noises more weird

than musical, brought up the rear of ] the procession. Later in the afternoon a party of "Warpole Islanders" arrived at the fair., The Children's costumes were judged by Mesdames W. Toy, H. G*. Banfield,' and T. Firman, who awarded prizes as follows:—Under six years: Geoffrey Radonovitch (I'm a Corker), Joyce Harvey (Victorian), most original; Noeline Crocker (Nurse), special; Noel Schenkel (Baby Indian), Shirley Miller (Spider Web). Under 10 years: Leslie Taylor (Indian), Bertha Arneson (Nurse), most original; Freda Benn (Doctor), special; Cynthia Curtis (Skiing), Effie and Gladys Boyd (Old Man and Woman). Over 10 years: Arthur Childs (Negro), Nessie Rees (Bournville Cocoa): most original, Everson Beaumont (Craven A). The winners of the adult costume competitions were Mrs J. Voyce (Early Victorian Posy), W. Briggs (Maori Chieftain). In the decorated car section the winning car was that of Mrs J. Voyce, driven by A. Thompson, a second prize being awarded to the High School boys for "St. James* Theatre." A baby show was judged by Sister M. E. Jones. The winners were:— Under 18 months: Lois Wilson. Under 12 months: Peter Mitchell. Under six months: Keith Loader. A special prize for twins was awarded to John and Robert Abbott. The financial result o. the fair is considered to be very satisfactory, the gross receipts amounting to £l4O. It is expected that the net proceeds will amount to more than £IOO. The net proceeds of last year's fair amounted to slightly more than £7O. Golf. A one-club mixed foursome played at Diamond Harbour yesterday for a trophy presented by Mr R. Y. Clow was won by P. Gilmour and Miss W. White-Parsons with 95 net. G. Cooper and Miss N. Pitcaithly and A. G. Sinclair and Miss E. White-Parsons, each with 96, tied for second place. Playing in the semi-final of the senior championship at Diamond Harbour, N. Thompson defeated T. Bowring. In the third round of the junioi championship E. Cooper defeated B. H Gilmour, 2 up and 1.
