NGAHAU MOORED TO WHARF
■ «> BOILER WILL BE ' UNLOADED TO-DAY The scow Ngahau, loaded with the Davis Gelatine Company's 47-ton boiler, was safely moored alongside the temporary landing-stage on the banks of the Heathcote on Saturday night. The scow was brought up the estuary from on Thursday, and owing to her draught being greater than was expected, considerable difficulty was experienced in getting her out of the channel and across the mud bottom of the river to the wharf.
All day oh Friday and Saturday men worked excavating the bed of the river, and every available device was utilised in the attempt to warp the Ngahau in to the temporary wharf. On Friday night the vessel was left with, the receding tide firmly settled in the mud about 30 feet from the bank. - Oh the high tide on Saturday morning she was dragged in until only 20 feet separated her from the wharf. She was left until the next tide at night, and for a long /time men and winches strained on ropes attached to the scow without moving her an inch. Even with the tide full in she could not be moved, and abotit 9 p.m. the contractor, Mr M. M. Wright, was on the point of abandoning the attempt when on the hang of the tide the vessel moved and was gradually pulled in to the landing stage. There she was securely moored and settled again in the mud as the tide went out. To-dav hydraulic jacks will be used to lift the boiler from the deck of the Ngahau, and if everything goes well the unloading will be completed during the day.
