SERIOUS FLOODS IN JAMAICA
* SEVENTY DROWNED MUCH DAMAGE DONE (Received August 17, 5.5 p.m.) KINGSTON (Jamaica), August 16". Seventy persons were drowned today in floods in the city and the parishes of St. Thortias, St. Catherine, and St. Mary. The damage is estimated at 2,000,000 dollars. Bridges and buildings were swept away and oanana plantations levelled. The storm which caused the flood lasted six hours, and is described as the worst in 80 years. The water rose as high as six feet in the streets and rushed through dwellings, washing away many occupants trapped in them.
