COMPETITIONS.
RICCARTON METHODIST CHURCHES. The competitions at Riccarton, which have been held under the auspices of the Riccarton Methodist churches, finished on Saturday evening. The Rev. H. Ryan, minister in charge of the circuit, complimented Mr C. Pilling, who had organised the competitions for the purpose of developing the talent in the circuit. He thanked Miss Eileen Leathwick (hon. secretary), Miss E. M. Jackson, and Mr W. H. Barrell for their valuable and willing assistance, and expressed the indebtedness of the circuit to Messrs L. N. Fleming and A. Schnack, who had acted as judges. On behalf of the committee, Mr C. Pilling presented them with a souvenir of their visit. Replying, the judges agreed that the competitions had shown that there was a wealth of talent in the circuit. Miss E. Leathwick was presented with a gift as a token of appreciation for the work she had done. A demonstration concert will be given on Wednesday night. The results were:— I PIANOFORTE DUET. Own Selection. Open. Misses Rona McLeod and Kathleen Moore, 90 points .. .. 1 Messrs H. G. Stevens and A. Clarke, 88 points .. .. ..2 Misses Melva Beswick and Phyllis Wise, 84 points .. ..3 The judge said that he had had great difficulty in separating the competitors. The standard of playing had been very high, and the winner's performance had been worthy of the best company. SACRED SOLO. Open. Mr C. C. Marsh, 88 points .. 1 Miss Eileen Leathwick, 87 points .. 2 Miss Eileen Ryan, 84 points .. 3 The judge said that the entries in the sacred solo had teen good, and some fine items had been given. PREPARED SPEECH. Open. Subject: "Has the Introduction of Machinery Done More Harm than Good?" Mr L. C. Clements, 93 points .. 1 Mr Ralph Leathwick, 91 points .. 2 Miss O. Duder and Mr Fred. Stevens, 90 points (equal) .. 3 Mr Fleming said that the winning effort had been a really exceptional one in both logic and continuity. The winner had gained marks also for his summing up. SHAKESPEAREAN RECITAL. Men. Mr Fred. Stevens, 93 points .. 1 Mr E. Williams, 91 points .. 2 Mr Ralph Leathwick, 89 points .. 3 Once again the standard had been very high, said the judge. Deportment and interpretation had been particularly well expressed.
