PROSECUTION UNDER THE RABBIT ACT.

DEFENDANT FINES £5

' ' Samuel Thornley, of The Peaks, Hawarden, was fined £5 and costs in the Magistrate's Court at Amberley for allowing the trapping of rabbits on his property after being served with a notice under the Rabbit Nuisance Act calling on him to destroy rabbits. The information was laid by the Hurunui Babbit Board. Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M., was on the bench.

" Mr- W. J. Sim, who appeared for the board, said that the person served with the notice was placed under a duty to do everything necessary to destroy, Within the shortest possible time, all rabbits on the land mentioned in the notice. The means to be adopted were poisoning, fumigation of burrows, and the filling in of burrows, unless the board gave permission for other ways to be used. All trapping on the land must cease for three months from the date of the service of the notice. The defendant, who was not repreMnted by counsel, pleaded not guilty. After hearing the evidence the Magistrate said it was not a case for a nominal penalty and fined the defendant £5 and costs.
