HISTORIC TREE UPROOTED.
The Kemp orange tree, planted at the Bay of Islands on August 10, 1818, by Mrs Jas. Kemp, a member of the Rev. Samuel Marsden's mission party, was uprooted in a storm on July 3. Steps have been taken to put the tree.in position again so that it can take fresh root and make a new start. The old tree has been in good bearing for more than 100 years and just before the gale the 1933 crop was picked. Two young orange trees which were worked from the Kemp tree two years ago were planted last March by the Gov-ernor-General at Waitangi on the occasion of the first meeting of the Waitangi Trust Board. It is interesting to note that the present owners, the Misses Kemp, live in the old home built more than 100 years ago by their grandfather, the house being the oldest wooden residence in the Dominion. Nearby is a pear tree brought from Sydney more than 110 years ago. The tree is 60ft high, has a great spread, and is more than 3ft through 4ft up the trunk. *
