DUTY ON BRITISH GOODS.

AUSTRALIA'S HIGH RATES. COMPLAINTS IN HOUSE OF COMMONS. LONDON, July JL In the House of Commons, Mr E. H, Pickering (Liberal, West Leicester) mentioned that Australia maintained duties ranging from 100 tp 300 per cent, on British hosiery and knitwear and enquired what was the difference in the basic wage of the two countries. Mr J. H. Thomas (Secretary of State for the Dominions) said the duties were on a high level, but he understood they were npw being considered by the Commons wealth Tariff Board. He was aware that British employers claimed that basic rates here were as high as any in the world. He also promised Mr Pickering to take action, if it could be usefully done, in relation to the 92J per cent, duty charges on British elastic fabric.
