LOW PRIZES FOR SHEEP.
*—. ROYAL SHOW ENTRIES. CANTERBURY PROTEST. The low values of prizes for sheep which it is proposed to offer at the nc3}t Royal Show to be held in Auckland in February, 1934, were criticised at a meeting of the general committee of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association yesterday. It was decided to protest against the prizes to the Royal Agricultural Society, on the ground that they were out of proportion to the importance of sheep entries. The secretary, Mr M. E. Lyons, said that the prizes for sheep did not encourage entries from any distance. In the breed class the first prize was set down at 30s, and the second prize at 10s. Unless some material alteration had been made in the original draft of the prize schedule, a man winning both first and second prizes in every breed class would take £SB away from the show. In answer to this criticism, the Auckland authorities would state that Auckland was not a sheep district. Mr James Deans: But it is a Royal Show. Professor R. E. Alexander said that sheep had not even been placed on an equal footing with pigs. He himself had protested against the differentiation. It was clearly not in keeping with the Royal Show to give higher prizes for pigs than for sheep, even although one would admit the importance of pigs. In the schedule it was shown that prizes would be given for two types of pig in one breed. There could be only one type in a breed, and the Royal Show authorities were not functioning properly if they had two types in a breed.
