JULY CELEBRATIONS. j The annual ball arranged as part of the July celebrations of the Loyal Orange Institution is always anticipated with pleasure by members and friends of the District Lodge No. 5, Christchurch, and the ball held last night at the Caledonian Hall proved a successful entertainment. The lodi'e emblems, a crown on an open Bible protected by crossed swords, were arranged on the platform with a background of greenery and pussywillows. An alcove had been draped with the lodge colours and reserved for the use of the guests of honour, who were the Mayor (Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P.), and Mrs Sullivan, the Rev. J. K. Archer and Mrs Archer, Mr and Mrs J. S. Neville, Bro. J. J. Hollinger (grand foreman), Mr N. Gordon (grand senior deacon) and Mrs Gordon, Bro. W. J. Knighton (grand inner guard) and Mrs Knighton, Bro. J. J. Middleton (past giand master) and Mrs Middleton. The grand march was led by Bro. F. Legge 'district master) and Mrs Fred Smith's Orchestra supplied dance music, and pipe extras were played by Messrs W. Will, J. Patterson, and Arthur Woodward. SHELL SOCIAL CLUB. Members of the Shell Social Club have decided to organise a series of socials during the winter, and last night they held their second of the series at Dixieland, where dancing and cards were enjoyed. The cosy lounge was arranged for cards and the ballroom was gaily decorated w ; th balloons and streamers.
An energetic committee, consisted of Misses Roma Boyce and J. McLeod, Messrs V. S. Tremain. A. Peckston, A McKenzie, R. G. Dunne, and J. A. Burrage (secretary).
Miss Boyce's frock was of white elephant crepe, made with cowl neckline. Miss McLeod wore a periwinkle blue georgette frock with inset yoke and puff sleeves of floral georgette to tone. Guests of honour were Mr S. N. B. Wynne (branch manager) and Mr W. T. Somervell (assistant branch manager). An exhibition dance was given by Mr and Mrs Leo Bowden and Miss Gladys Fitzsimmons, and Miss Mavis Ritchie gave a humorous recitation.

FAREWELL PARTY. An afternoon party was given by Mrs F. M. Orchard (Cambridge terrace), in honour of Miss Dorothy Maginness, who will leave for England this week. The time was pleasantly spent witn singing, recitations, and competitions, the latter being won by Mrs P. W. Reeves, Misses Hilda Freeman, and Eileen Henry. The quests presented a travelling rug to Miss Maginness, and wished her bon voyage. Amongst those present were Mesdames George Maginness, P. W. Reeves, J. B. Pearson, L. Saul, T. Quirk, S. Mazey, P.
