ALLEGATIONS OF BRIBERY.
AUSTRALIAN CUSTOMS DEPARTMENT. CHARGE MADE IN SENATE. (L'KJTKD PF.KSS ASSOCIATION'—BST ELECTRIC TJCLtGKAPn—COPYRIGHT.) CANBERRA, July 7. Allegations of corruption in the Customs Department were made by Senator Matthew Reid (of Queensland) in the Senate. j Senator Reid said he knew of a case in which two firms competing against each other in Sydney imported the same article. A member of one firm noticed that the other firm was selling certain articles much more cheaply than he could afford to do. Upon making enquiries he found that his opponent had imported the goods free of duty, and was told if he advanced a tidy sum of money he would get his goods through free also. He paid the bribe to save his business. The Minister for Customs, Mr T. W. White, said if Senator Reid supplied particulars an immediate enquiry would be instituted. t
