RETURNED MEN.
THE CHRISTCHOICH ASSOCIATION. MEETING OF THE EXECUTIVE. During June 691 issues of rations, including coal, meat, and miscellaneous goods, were made to unemployed returned soldiejrs by the Christchurch Returned Soldiers' Association, reported the benevolent committee to a meeting of the association's executive last night. The Rev. F. T. Read presided. The committee's report stated that applications for relief granted had been as follows:—For the week ended June 10, 76 miscellaneous rations, 85 bags of coal, and 40 pieces of meat, total 201; June 17, 107 jpiscellaneous, 38 bags of coal, 40 pieces of meat, total 185; June 23, 79 miscellaneous, 39 bags of coal, 59 pieces of meat, total 177; June 30, 60 miscellaneous, 35 bags of coal and 33 pieces of meat, total 128. Aid far Work!ess Men. The employment committee reported that it had been decided to approve six days of subsidy work for one man, overhauling a motor truck, and that the employment officer had been given power to act in conjunction with the secretary regarding a possibility of employing six men in the building trade on a subsidy basis. There had been 45 new registrations during June, making a weekly average of more than 300 for the four weeks. During the month 527 days' work on subsidy had been given at a cost of £lB4 14s 4Jd, while 19 days* work had been found without subsidy, and three men had been placed in permanent employment. For the period, April 1 to June 30, there had been 1628 days of subsidised work at a cost of £512 to the association, representing an aggregate benefit Ln wages of £1330 to 378 individual men; eleven men had been engaged in timber cutting at the Glenroy camp. It was decided that a deputation consisting of Messrs R. M. Grant, W. E. Leadley, and A. H. Parfltt should wait on the finance committee of the Canterbury Patriotic Fund, asking that a grant should be made towards training boys at Flock House. On the motion of Mr Leadley it was decided to look into the possibilities of organising an honorary medical service for disabled men who were breaking down in health, and who could not attribute their condition to war service.
