LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL.

RT. HON. SIR FRANCIS BELL'S TERM EXPIRES. (PHE33 ASSOCIATION WELLINGTON, May 19. Twenty-one years' continuous service as a member of the Legislative Council will be completed by the Rt. Hon. Sir Francis Bell to-morrow, when his present seven-year term of appointment ends. Several other Legislative Councillors are due to retire in the near future. The terms of the Hon. C. J. Carrington and the Hon. J. A. Hanan expire on June 17. The Hon. Sir James Allen will complete his term on June 1 next year. Later that month the Hon. Sir Edwin Mitchelson, Colonel the Hon. C. J. Smith, and the Hon. Robert Scott will complete their seven years. The present council has a membership of 22. Retirements have taken a heavy toll of the strength of the chamber during the last few years, there having been 35 members when the Coalition Government assumed office in 1931.
