EMPLOYMENT OF TEACHERS.

TRAINING COLLEGE STUDENTS. APPOINTMENT OF PROBATIONERS. Opposition to the intention of the Department of Education not to appoint any probationer teachers in 1934 was expressed in the report of the appointments committee presented to the Canterbury Education Board yesterday. The report suggested that at least a restricted number of probationers should be appointed, and attention was drawn at the meeting to the fact that probationers were being absorbed in Canterbury at the rate of about 100 a year, Mr C. S. Thompson suggesting that this fact should be brought to thenotice of the Director of Education (Mr N. Lambourne). According to another report presented 37 former training college students had been given appointments since last January. The total number of students at present not permanently placed was 316, but 156 of these would begin work next week, when the schools reopened, being distributed as follows: Grade O schools, 25; probationary assistants, 83; additional assistants, 13; scale positions not filled permanently, 9; relieving teachers, 26. At the end of this year a total of 70 students would leave training college. The training college committee reported that the department had advised that as there would be only division C and third year students in training next year, it was proposed to accommodate them all at Auckland. In view of this arrangement it was suggested that the staff be employed to the best advantage in the schools. . The department had also advised that no probationers were to be appointed next year. It was resolved that Mr Banks, the town members, and others who could conveniently attend, meet the director on his forthcoming visit to place before turn the board's view, that it was desirable to appoint probationers in 1934, and to discuss the proposed closing of the college. The appointments committee reported that a letter had been received from the department advising that no probationers would be appointed in 1934. It was resolved that the board express the opinion that a restricted number of probationers should be appointed in 1934, on the understanding that if :i£ were not possible to reopen the training colleges, their terms should be extended lor a further year. The reports were adopted.

Finlay, assistant mistress (transfer); Okuku, Miss E. E. S. Leslie, sole teacher; Shirley, Miss R. L. Dearalcy, assistant mistress; Tai Tapu, Mr A. A. Thompson, head teacher (transfer); Tawai, Mr A. M. Grigor, sole teacher; Tim'aru West, Mr H. C. Romans, headmaster; Tuahiwi, Mr E. D. Farrant, sole teacher; Wharenui, Miss L. A. W. Gregg, assistant mistress. Dearsley, sole teacher (Shirley); Brookside, Mr A. McCallum, head teacher (Temuka); Christchurch West, Mr A. A. Thompson, assistant master (Tai Tapu); Culverden, Miss F, A. Anderson. assistant mistress Cleaving service); Fairview, Miss M. McConnell, assistant mistress (marriage); Hook, Miss F. O, Steinmetz, assistant mistress (Dmisandel); Linwood avenue, Miss A. Goodchild, assistant mistress (St, Albans); Okarito, Miss T. M. Hussey, sole teacher (Southland); Okuku, Mrs R. E. Burjiet, sole teacher (Woodend); Pareora West, Mr C. D. Francis, head teacher (Ashburton). In view of falling attendance it had been decided to defer filling the position of assistant mistress at Eiffel ton. As a result of a report which had been received from visiting members, it had been resolved that the Jacksons school be closed and the Aickens school reopened as from May 22. A schedule had been received from the Hawke's Bay Board giving replies received from other boards about the desirability of making all staff changes take effect at thp end of terms. It was resolved that the Canterbury Board should adopt the practice as far as possible. A report had also been received from Mr L. F. de Berry, headmaster of the West Christchurch District High School, on his recent visit to the North Island. Consideration of this report had been deferred until next meeting. It had been resolved, on the request of Mr S. Smith, that the senior inspector and the secretary should investigate the possibilities of establishing an intermediate school in Ashburton. The report,was adopted.
