GODLEY STATUE.
REMOVAL FROM CATHEDBAII PRECINCTS. . Without noteworthy incident or mishap, the statue of John Robert Godley, the founder of Canterbury, was removed from its site in the Cathedral precincts yesterday morning to the yard of the contractors, J. Tait, Ltd., Dtuidas street, where it will remain till the foundation for the statue on its original site on the plot in Cathedral Square is ready, early next week. • To avoid the presence of a large gathering of the public the work of removal started shortly after ,6 o'clock yesterday morning, and by 7 o'clock the statue had been removed from the pedestal and placed on a lorry and taken to Dundas street. Workmen, in the streets at that , early hour were astonished, of course, to see the statue being conveyed through fee streets. The stones forming the pedestal were removed during the day and a start was made with the breaking up of the concrete base. The concrete foundation, which w about the same depth as the mound, also will be removed. The mound is to be levelled and returfed. The documents and other records deposited in the pedestal at present are in the care of the contractors.
