SOUTHLAND POWER BOARD.
MEMBERSHIP TO REMAIN AT 12. (PBBS'« ASSOCIATION TXLEOSAX.) INVERCARGILL, April 11. An endeavour to have the number of members on the Southland Power Board reduced from 12 to five was made by Mr J. T. Carswell at the monthly meeting of the Board to-day. Mr Carswell reopened a matter that was raised, two years ago when a special committee set up to report on this proposal returned a finding in favour of its adoption. However, the recommendation was not put into effect at that time, and Mr Carswell moved to-day that the previous motion to the effect that no action be taken with regard to the special committee's finding be rescinded, and a recommendation be made to the Government that the number of members of the board be reduced to five. Mr Carswell said that last year £440 had been paid out in administrative costs, and in the previous year £319 was spent in this direction. Now the board's functions were largely administrative, and he was of the opinion that the work could be carried out just as efficiently and at considerably less expense. After discussion the motion was rejected by six votes to five.
