BOWLS.
♦ CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS. MADDISON TROPHY GAMES. In dti]l but favourable weather three rounds of the champion of champions singles competition of the Christchureh Bowling Centre were played yesterday, the Christchureh and Bcckenharn greens being used. Light rain fell just before the third round concluded, but the results of the games were not materially affected, as the winners were in fairly safe positions at the time. The singles' title carries with it the Maddison Trophy, and of thin year's contenders W. J. Shearman (Shirley) is the only previous winner; he won the title in the 1915-1G season. The Play. In the first round on the Christcliureh green A. J. Olliver ran right away from T. Freeman, who failed to get the speed of the green. Freeman won the first head, but he scored again only on the ninth, tenth, sixteenth, and eighteenth, and abandoned the game on the next head W. H. Coombes had an easy win over F. Dudley. The latter won the first end, but Coombes took four on the next, and the board read 10-2 in his favour at the finish of the fifth head. E. Alathieson ran into a comfortable advantage in the first threo heads and was never seriously challenged. The best contested game was that between G. Dickson and A. W. B. Healey. The latter quickly mastered the green, and his early lead enabled him to register a uarrow victory. L. \V. Besley had little difficulty in eliminating S. H. Maddren, whose display was not up to his usual standard. G. L. Home accounted for Dr. J. D. Marks, and W. F. Raphael held a comfortable lead over G. Eeed. Papanui's representative, the Kev. E. Bandy, fought stubbornly against W. ,T. Shearman, and a fine game went in favour of the Shirley player by a small margin. E. J. Smith, the Elmwood colt, won his first Maddison Trophy game when he defeated a solid singles exponent in E. J. Cooke. In the second round E. Mathiesun proved a little too good for Healey. and Monk was more solid than Smith! The latter indulged in several drives, and though connecting with his objective the luck went against him. Olli-. vcr made a present of his game to Coombes. The latter was one down on the board and one up on the head when Olliver played his last bowl, a yard-on shot which pushed another counter in for the Sydenham player. In the extra head Coombes scored a single. AV. F. Eaphael accounted for G. Eeed in the first round and eliminated a dangerous contender for the title in W. J. Shearman in the second round. W. H. Higgins, from Ashburton, played soundly when he put out Smith. Home's second -win was at the expense of Besley, who did not reproduce his form of the earlier game. The third round provided a surprise in the defeat of "W. F. Eaphael by W. H. Higgins. The Ashburton player was very consistent and finished five up. G. L. Homo could not withstand VS r . Warflell. and W. H. Coombes went under to E. Monk. In this game the scoring was very even throughout, the board showing HJ-all on the 18th head. Monk
then added two and two singles. Mathieson continued in winning vein when he accounted for J. Cronin. These two players recently met for tho singles title of the Ashburton sub-Centre, and Mathicson confirmed this earlier form bv his substantial win yesterday. 'The semi-finals -will be played on the Christchureh green on Thursday next. Results of yesterday's games are as J follows: — CH'fiISTCHURCH GREEN. .. First Round. A. W. B.
