STREET APPEAL TO-DAY. | 1 FUNDS URGENTLY NEEDED. ijt * - 1 A -generous response is expected to [| tie appeal being made to-day. in aid.of || the Bed Cross Society'* peace work j<| which, since May 2, last year, has bee® | ! |. carried out by the Women's Executive of « the Canterbury Centre of the society. || The executive received contributions |ij last year from tho various sub-centres, t?j from members of the centre, from the ,| general public, and also was assisted from the Mayor's Belief of Distress J-f Fund. The present position is that funds are exhausted and tho executive || has been working on the little stock in | hand. In view of the approaching win- U \ tor there .is urgent need for funds to hj provide the families of unemployed re- | turned soldiers with clothing. L Since May 2 last year, tho number of 4 returned soldiers' families assisted ha* || been 750; assistance has been gives if not once, but periodically. There were J| 2022 children in these families. There H were auppliod G7sv garments; 214 Man- y| kets; and 59 baby outfits, .jj Tho headquarters of to-day '& appeal ff* will be at 127 Worcester street, the '<j Red Cross Society's headquarters. Mr* h Henry Wyatt will be in charge, and ro- jj freshments for the collectors and help- % ers will bo provided by the Mayoress "^ (Mrs D. G. Sullivan) and Mrs .T. S. jj Neville, at the City Council Chambers. !J More collectors arc needed and Lady || Wigram, chairwoman of the executive, :|| will be glad if those willing to assist ;ji| will report at headquarters this morning :|J or dariMg tho day.
