HIGH OFFICIAL DISMISSED.
FREE STATE ACTION. FORMER OPPONENT OF PRESENT GOVERNMENT. (TOITED PRESS ASSOCIATIOK—BT ELBCTIUC ' TELBGBAFH—COPYBIGHT.) (Received February 23, 9.10 p.m.) DUBLIN, February 22. Tho Government, without explanation, has removed General O'Duffy from the position of Chief of the Civic Guard, which ho has held since 1925, and replaced him by Colonel Broy, the chief superintendent. Humours of changes among the high officers of the Civil Guard have been in circulation for weeks. The Government party came in to conflict with some of those officers during the civil war. The newspaper of the Irish Republican Army lias been demanding the dismissal of General O'Duffy, and the left wing of the Fianna Fail party, during recent months, has been persistent in demanding his removal, which follows the removal of Colonel Nelligan, chief of the detective division, a. month ago. General 0 Duffy took a great interest in national athletics in the Olympic Games. He also took a large party of Civm Guards on a pilgrimage to Rome, but is perhaps best known through his supervision of the drawing for the Irish sweepstakes.
