ASHBURTON, TRANSPORT FOR SCHOOL CHILDREN. Arrangements for the transport pf secondary school children of the Mount Somers district, into Ashburton by bus, because of the curtailment of the Mount Somers railway passenger service have been completed, and a daily service will be commenced on Monday next. About twenty children of both the High School and the Technical School, from Springburn, Mount Somers, Mayfield, Valetta, Hackthorne, Westerfield, and Lagmhor, will take advantage of ,the service. In reply to representations made to the Education Department for a subsidy on the cost of transport of the children by bus, the Ashburton Technical School has been advised that no assistance will be given by the Department in this direction. Unemployment Committee. The executive of the Unemployment Committee met yesterday, when the chairman (Mr B. Kerr) presided. It was reported that thero would be 221 men on tho register for the week endipg Alarch 4 (Class A 12, Class B 132, Class C 77). ■ The allocation was £327 17s npd the amount required to give tho men their full quota of work would bo £450 IGs. It was decided to give one, two and a half, and four days respectively, involving an expenditure of £323 10s, and an extra day to eight B2 men with up to two children. It was reported that three married men and 11 single men wore still working under the No. 4A Scheme, while 27 were employed under the No. 10 (building) scheme. McGuigan, who has been first assistant master at the Ashburton East School since the beginning of this yoar, has been appointed headmaster of the Pleasant Point District High School, and takes over his new duties on Monday. j Timber Merchant's Failure. Inadequate capital and steadily deteriorating business conditions were advanced as the chief causes of tho bankrupty of David Llewellyn McKay, timber merchant, of Ashburton, at a meeting b£ creditors yesterday. The financial statement showed a deficiency of £282 17s 6d. Tho amount owing to unsecured creditors was £615 9s lOd, and to secured creditors £6O 17s 6d, thp value of securities being ~ £l7O 17s 6d. Stock-in-trade was valued at £193 ss, and book debts wero shown as £29 7s 4d. In his statement bankrupt said he was 23 years old. He commenced business with £75 and borrowed other sums from his family. Under examination by tho Official Assignee (Mr A. J, Ching), bankrupt said he owned racehorses, four of which he had sold to his sister. He had the free use of his sister's car on condition that he kept it in order. Creditors considered that the position revealed by bankrupt was unsatisfactory, as no books had been kept and there was nothing to indicate the extent of his trading transactions during the past two years.
