ASHBUKTON. DANGEROUS CORNERS. With the object of reducing the risk of accidents at the railway viaduct near the junction of Carter's terrace, Tinwald, and the Main South road, tlio Ashburton Comity Council is contemplating making alterations to the corners. A plan has been prepared by the county engineer (Mr A. A. Fooks) and has been submitted to the Railway Department for jits approval. East Ashburton Swimming Club. The committee of the East Ashburton Amateur Swimming Club met on Tuesday evening, when the chairman, Mr W. Hunter, presided. It was decided to hold a club carnival this evening, and the final carnival of the season on March 9. Personal. Mr J. Raleigh, of the Ashburton Magistrate's Court staff, has received notice of his transfer to Hokitika. Tire in Rubbish Dump. . .An outßreak. of fire occurred in the town rubbish dump in the Ashburton riverbed' about' 11 o'clock yesterday .morning. The fire was extinguished with the aid of hoses by several employees of the Borough Council. Garden Party. A garden party in aid of the Ashburton. branch of the Plunkot Society will be held at the Longbeach homestead on Saturday. The function will be opened by the Mayor (Mr W.«H. Woods). In addition to the large number of stalls several jeornpetitions will be introduced, including clock golf, nail-driving, tennis, and croquet. Chambers, Cass street, Ashburton, took place at the Ashburton Cemetery on Tuesday. Mrs Chambers is survived by her husband and four sons, all of Ashburton. The Rev. A. G. METHVEN. ''The monthly meeting of the Methvon District High School Committee was. held on Monday evening, Mr Stanley Smith presiding. The- headmaster (Mr A. S. Kennedy) reported that when ' the school reopened the 101 l number was: Primary department, 115 boys, 101 girls; total 219. Secondary department, 17 boys, 20 girls; total 3?; grand total, 256. It was decided to hold the annual swimming sports on Thursday afternoon. In a friendly tennis match between teams representing the Methven District High School (secondary department) and the Old Pupils' Association, present pupils won by 55 games (five sets) to 53 games (seven sets).
