TIMARU. CRUELTY TO ANIMALS. A meeting of the committee of the South Canterbury branch of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals wa3 held yesterday afternoon, Mr \N. M. Orbell presiding. The secretary, Mr J. H. SinclairThomaon, was appointed delegate to the meeting of the Dominion Federation in Wellington on March 1. : . Correspondence on the "bobby calf" industry was read. The inspector (Mr 1 G. Gliddon) said that the treatment in the transport "of the calves had inii proved, and the actual slaughtering was more humane than the slaughtering of sheep. The only cruelty was the i delay in picking up the calves. "It's a crude business altogether," he added. y Touching on the chain killing method of slaughtering, Mr Gliddonsaid he did not see why the sheep could not be killed before they were hung up. The old method had been to kill a certain number in the pens and then swing them up. The matter was left in the hands of the secretary to bring up at the Dominion conference. Magistrate's Court. -A sitting of the Timaru Magistrate's Court was held yesterday before Mr C. It. Orr . Walker, S.M. judgment by default was given for plaintiff in the following case:—Westport Coal Company v. A. O. Murdoch, £6 4s 3d and costs. Russel Stanley Goodman proceeded against Alice May Taylor for possession of a house and back rent. Defendant was ordered to give up possession on or before March 22. Judgment was also given for arrears of rent, £l3 7s 6d, with costs. Robert Nathaniel Brown proceeded against Joseph M. Flett on a judgment summons for £4 lis lOd.
