UNEMPLOYMENT VOTE.
INCREASE ON ORIGINAL ESTIMATE. (BRITISH OFFICIAL WIRELESS.) RUGBY, December 80. The Tote of £19,000,000 for employw passed by the House °f Commons last night, was mainly required for the payment of transitional benefits under the insurance fund, »pd irj order to maintain the continued balance of the insurance fund. This increase on the original estimate was in part the sequel to a some- ■ what optimistic over-estimate of employment. It was pointed out by Sir Henry Betterton, Minister for Labour, that the world deterioration which had showns signs qf being arrested the original estimates were framed had progressively continued, and the expected improvement had not materialised. He emphasised that Great Brjtain bore the cost of unemployment without borrowing, and that Great Britain, almost alone among the nations, was maintaining its position in the face of the formidable economic crisis. The suplementary estimate also included tbe Government's contribution of £ 10,000 towards voluntary movements which havb extended renwkab*7 •dyring recent months, to help the unemployed in fining useful and healthy means of occupying their time.
