FIRE PROTECTION.

UPPER RICCARTON DISTRICT. DEPUTATION TO FIRE BOARD. In an endeavour to arrange for protection against loas by fire, especially in the more congested district about Church Corner, Upper Eiccarton, a depu tation from the Waimairi County Council waited upon the Christchurch Fire Board last evening. At the protection extends to Ham road, and it is hoped to make some provision to ensure the safety of houses in the district up to Church Corner. There were present Messrs T. M. Charters (chairman), K. W. Robinson, Q. C. Hill, C. A. Cooper, E. H. Parlane, E. 11. Butterfleld, C. J. Treleavcn (secretary), and Superintendent C. 0. Warner. Mr C. E. Cross, who represented the Waimairi County Council, in outlining i the purpose of the deputation, said that there had been a movement begun by the Burgesses' Association in the district for the extension of the fire protection, and as a result of the meetings held it had been suggested that the Board be asked to set up a station near Church Corner. The purpose of his visit was to see if some arrangement could bo come to to ensure adequate protection against loss by fire. Water Tanks Essential. The Superintendent of the Brigade (Mr C. C. Warner) said that a full measure of protection could be given by the Board as soon as arrangements were made for unde-ground water tanks to be provided. There wag no reason why the Board should not take over the district, but before this could be done the question of supplying money to enable tanks to be sunk would have to be decided. The Board could not be required to find the money, and the ratepayers in tho district would have to be approached. There was no water of any use at present in the district, but there v-uld bo no difficulty in getting it by pinking wells. Mr TJo"bii)gon said that the Board would be only too willing to help if it could, but any scheme suggested mufsfc bo feasible bcf<-- - the Board could do anything. It was decided to request the superintendent to mako an estimate of the post of sinking suinpa in the vicinity, Iho cost of the annual upkeep, and how far it would bo possible to pump the water. He was also requested to adriao the Waimairi County Council of the figures.
