——♦_ — ASHBURTON. HOSPITAL INSPECTED. An inspection of tlie Ashburton Public Hospital and Morgue was made by Dr. M. H. Watt (Director-Geueral of Health) and Mr V. Keisenberg (secretary of the Health Department, Wellington) yesterday. Dr. Watt expressed himself as highly satisfied with the way in which the institution was being controlled.

He later met members of the Board and discussed matters pertaining to the Ashburton Hospital. Dr. Watt and Mr Keisenberg left for the north last evening. Unemployment Committee. The Ashburton Unemployment Committee met yesterday afternoon, when Mr B. Kerr presided. The Unemployment Commissioner advised that, with the co-operation of the Departments of Land and Survey and Agriculture, a scheme had been formulated for the utilisation of unemployed labour in combating the rabbit pest. In the case of private lands the employer was required to provide equipment and must supervise the .work. All rabbit skins were to be the property of the worker. The Board would pay £1 a week for single men and oOs for married men, together with 5s a week to the employer as a contribution towards tho food supplied. Of the 30s paid to married men £1 would be paid direct to his wife. In the case of Crown lands the eost» of equipment would be paid by the Lands Department. It was mentioned that the winter time was best for rabbiting, as skins would be more valuable. It was decided to take no action in the meantime in connexion with the scheme.

The secretary (Mr W. Patterson) reported that the allocation for the ensuing week was £895 9s and the amount required to give the men their full quota of work was £100(> Is 6d. There were 400 men available for work. It was agreed to give the two-day men one day's work and the three-day and four-day men three days, the balance of the money to bo distributed among the most necessitous cases. _ It was resolved to grant the Upper Ashburton Road Board six men for road Work under the No. 5 Scheme. Mr J. P. Hanratty stated that there were 24 men now engaged under the building scheme. The value of the work was £4672 3s and the cost of labour was £1245 Is (3d. Seven applications from farmers ior men under the No. 4a Scheme were received. Four were granted, one was also granted to the end of September, and two to the end of November. • Fifteen applications for work under the No "> Scheme were received. Twelve were granted, one given work under the No 4a Scheme, one held over one week, and one held over for further enquiry. Hakatere Lodge. Hakatere Lodge, No 68, 1.0.0. F., met on Wednosday evening, when the N.G. (Bro. L. Aitken) presided. Five brothers were reported sick, while three bad declared off the sick funds._ Music Examinations. Men's Hockey. A men's hockey match for the Walker Hall Shield, between Southern. winners of the Geraldinn competition, and Ashburton, winners of .the Mid-Can-terbury competition, was played at Ashburton yesterday, the visitors ' winning «by five goals to nil. the scorers being A. Bryant (3), G. Webb, and J. Maitland one each. N. Willis, the outstanding young player of the Ashburton team, had three unsuccessful attempts at goal. On two occasions the ball went over the bar, while D. Turner, goalkeeper for Southern, stopped the ball with a brilliant catch.

Technical Cricket Club. The annual meeting of tnc Technical Cricket Club was held last evening. Mr W. Crawford presided. Tho balance showed that the assets exceeded the liabilities by £6 6s BU. Reference was made in the report to the fact that H, Baird, a third grade player, had

made the greatest number of runs in club matches in the whole of the county during the season. The election of officers resulted as follows:—Patron, Mr J. Connolly, M.P.; president, Mr E. J.
