TIMARU. MAGISTRATE'S COURT. A charge of using an unregistered car was admitted by Charles Pateman, who appeared before Mr C. B. Orr Walker' 8.M., in the Magistrate's Court yesterday. FAIRLIE. The monthly meeting of the Volunteer Firo Brigade was held in the Fire Brigade room. Captain Close presided. The captain reported that during the month there had been one alarm, a chimney firo in the township. The engine had had several adjustments made by the mechanic, and was now in good condition tor easy starting. Most of the firemen were now conversant with the starting of the engine. It was decided that a notice be put in a prominent place stating that the engine must not be removed until at least one fireman was present to take- charge. • A letter was received iroin the Mackenzie Countv Council stating that the question of the erection of an electric alarm would he looked- into. A total of 612 "bobby" calves have been collected from the Temuka district since August 25th, under the supervision of the South Canterbury Calf Export Committee. This is an average, number. Representatives of the Railway Board visited Temuka yesterday morning, and were met by delegates from the Borough Council and the Progress League. The Mayor (Mr A. W. Buzan) explained the necessity for lengthening the railway platform, in order i that express trains could be fully accommodated. WAIMATE. At a meeting of the Waimate Hospital Committee there were present: Messrs J. I. Hayman (chairman), H. J. Dash, F. J. Bailey, G. J. Shackleton, A. Grant, F. Akhurst, G. Hennessey. J. Dempsey, and J. T. Hay. In his statement the chairman reported that receipts for August totalled £165 ss, and accounts had been presented for payment for £583 18s 9d. A total of 55 males and 58 females had been treated during August. At a meeting of the executive of the Waimate Unemployment Committee there were present: The chairman (Mr G. Dash), Messrs J. V. Riaeh, W. G. Paul, and the certifying officer (Mr G, W. Browii). It was decided strictly to enforce the conditions laid down by the Board in regard to the growing of vegetables by the unemployed, and to carry out ah inspection of relief workers' gardens in about two weeks' time. It was decided to notify all men receiving assistance and having small holdings that they would be put off the scheme on October 30th, as by that time some return should be forthcoming from their properties.

GERALDINE. A meeting of the Geraldine branch of the Women's Christian Temperance Union was held in the Presbyterian Hall. The president (Mrs F. H. Wallach) was in the chair.
