PERSONAL. ISMCIAt. TO THB E}tiß.) GREYMOUTH, September S. Miss Esther James, who is on a walkjug tour through Isew Zealand, and who has been visiting the West Coast, left yesterday for Westport. Messrs' A. Lima and A. Bebau, jun., left to-day on a visit to Wellington. Mr 11. Burnett, who has been visiting relatives in Greymouth, returned to-day to Knox College, Bunedin. Messrs J. Gilbert and C. Burning left to-day to visit Wellington. Detective H. C. Murch left to-day for Auckland on transfer. Mr A. I. Flett, chief postmaster, will leave on holiday on Monday. He will be relieved by Mr H. Patterson, supervisor of the telegraph branch. Mr G. Peck, who has been spending a holiday on the West Coast, returned to-day to Christchurch. Valerjictoiy. Mr 11. ('. Murch, who has been connected with tho detective branch of the Greymouth police force for the past seven years, and has left for Auckland, was met yesterday by the Greymouth police force and presented with a travelling bag. The presentation was mado by Inspector Lopdelj, who also handed Mr Murch a travelling rug for Mrs Murch. Relief Works.

A meeting of local authorities was held yesterday to discuss the proposed amended rates of pay and .the number of days to be worked during the fourweekly period on relief works. The local Inspector of Labour (Mr F. G. Davies) was asked to ascertain from the Unemployment Board the details of the proposals now operating in cities. On receipt of the information, another meeting is to be held. A proposal was put forward to distribute the work over four weeks, and to make up any deficiency in the allowance from the Mayor's Fund. Mala Highways. Mr F. W. Furkert, chairman of the Highways Board, in company with Mr T. A. Johnston, district engineer of Public Works,'has made an inspection of public works in the Westland and Grey counties. In F-outli Westland the bridge sites at Fox river and Cook river were inspected, and also the works carried out between Waiho and Weheka, including the track and bridge work at the Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers. An inspection was also made of tho Okari'to harbour, Waitangi river, and other localities where public works arc being carried on. The West Coast road and the relief works at Teremakau ant] Lake Haupirj. tho Greymouth Harbour works, and the hydro works at Kaimata were visitor!. Mr Furkert also discussed district works with the Grey branch of tho Canterbury Automobile Association and Chamber of Commerce. Miniature Eifle Shooting. The final shoot for fhc Grey Miniature Rifle Club's trophies on Wednesday evening resulted in victories for Miss N. Hamilton and E. R. Moss. The former had a total of ?71 for t»P aggregate of the tournament, and Moss had 272. The runners-up wers Miss K. Cairney with 270, and S. vSharman with 270. Tn the final shoot, Miss Hamilton scored 69 and Moss OS. The winners of the hotty button for the week wero Miss J. Hamilton, who scored 63, and I. Hamilton, who scored 00. ' School Competitions. The annual competition between the Hokitiku and Keofton High Schools in Rugby football and basketball were copipletcd yesterday, when Hokitika won the football match by }4 to nij. In the basketball match Hokitika won by IS to !). A match between a team of the visitors and a team of Hokitika girls was won by Kcefton in a close contest by 9 to 8. Harbour Board. The Greymouth 1 Harbour Board mot on Tuesday evening, the chairman, Mr P. J. McLean, presiding. Mr S. W. Strong, geologist, forwarded details of the geological survey being carried out under his supervision on the Board's endowments at the Nine-Mile. Tho harbour engineer reported that 5252 tons of stone and spoil had been taken from the Cobden quarry duripg the month, and 941 tons of suitable stone had been'deposited on the south breakwater extension. He reported, that some of the piles on the extension were alreadv affected bv the depredations of the toredo, and had had to be removed. The quantity of stone already deposited on the extension was 13,763 tons. The harbourmaster (Captain Cox) reported that the mean depth for the month at higbwater on the Grey l>ar had been 21ft 4in, and in the river 21ft 3in.
