PERSONAL. Messrs W. Braniley an .1 (J. H. P. Maynard Avere elected employees' representatives on the Ashburton Technical School Board for a term of three years at a meeting of employees last evening. Mr R. Houston, who was displaced, lias been a member of the Board for nine years. Reference to the death of Mr Angus Horsey, who was a member of the Ashburton Power Board from its inception until last April, was made by the-chair-man, Mr E. F. Nicoll, at the Board meeting yesterday, and members stood in silence as a mark of respect. A motion of sympathy with Mr Andrew McFarlane, Oamaru, an ex-member, in the death of his wif?, was passed at yesterday's meeting of -the Power Board.

Injuries to Toot. R: Watts, of Rapley street, 'was admitted to the Public Hospital on Saturday, suffering from a severe cut across one foot, as the result of the axe slipping while he was chopping wood. Rugby Union. The Ashburton Rugby Union Management Committee met last evening, Mr W. ff. Sarney presiding. The Ellesmero Sub-Union wrote confirming September 17th as the date for the senior and junior representative matches at Dunsandel. Tn reply to a letter from the union pointing out that Mr J. W. Bowden's letter to the union, which was forwarded to the association had been taken in committee by the union, which considered it an act of discourtesy on j the part of tho referees to take the letter in open meeting, tho Reforees' Association wrote stating that it regretted having taken the letter in open meeting. There was no intimation in tho union's covering letter that they desired the contents to be treated as confidential. Therefore, they failed to se« why the union considered their action discourteous, especially when the union had discussed similar matters in open meeting. The letter was tabled. In reply to a complaint from the Methven Club, that the third grade selectors had not given sufficient consideration to the third grade match between Methven and Allenton on August 6th, Mr 11. J. Chapman, one of the selectors, stated that he had seen six third grade teams in action. Mr A. Thomson, another selector, said he had witnessed three-parts of the match in question. These explanations were considered satisfactory. It was decided that the junior competition be closed, Mt. Somers being declared tha winners. It was resolved that a junior Possibles versus Probables match be played on August 27th iu preparation for tho representative fixture with South Canterbury the following Saturday. It was decided to write asking the Hinds Club why they did not notify their intention to default in the junior grade on Saturday, and to state that a fine of 10s had been imposed automatically.

Power Board. At the monthly meeting of the Power Board held yesterday, the chairman, Mr E. F. Nicoll, presided. It was reported that tho revenue for last month was £3341 19s, compared with £3449 2d Id for July, 1931. The chairman paid a tribute to the power-house staff which had dealt efficiently with a fault to the Diesel engine during the month resulting in the saving of a considerable sum to the Board. Tho tendor of Messrs Richardson and McCabe (Wellington), £1056 15s lOd, ftfr the supply of 600 iron-bark poles was accepted. The engineer-secretary reported that a tender had been received for spun reinforced concrete polls, but owing to the Board's financial position these were out of the question. RAKAIA. There was a good attendance aL a social held in St. Mark's schoolroom on Saturday evening by the Ladies' Guild. Competitions were won by Mrs Tatterson and Mr L. Alexander. Music for the dancing was supplied by Miss F. Cornelius, and extras wcro played by Mr I>. O'Reilly, and Mr S. Shellock. Mr E. Weaver was M.C. Miss J. Hounsell, who has been teacher of the Te Pirita School for the past eighteen months, is leaving to tako up a similar position at the Wailio School. On Thursday evening Miss Hounscll was tho guest of honour at a party given tit the residence of Mr and Mrs W. Inch, "The Terraces," Te Pirita. An enjoyable time was spent in music and games, Songs were sung by Mr Maxwell, the accompaniments being played by Miss G. Pa line tt. Banjo selections were played by Mr Frampton. DORIE. At the Dorio Miniature Kiflo Club's range on Thursday evening, a friendly match was fired between the Dorio and Seafield Rifle Clubs in conjunction with the first round of the Ashburton County Shield competition. Johnston. R. Oakley, Turner, and A. D. Kirklaud (secretary). One new member was "enrolled. Mrs Witliell had on exhibition an article of poonah painting, which was much admired. Langmaid. Mr R. Stoddart won the njen's prize, and Misses J. Miles, R. Arnst, D. Dollman, and L. Vessey tied for the women's prize, which was finally won by Miss Miles. A remit moved by Mr James Carr was That the Dominion executive arrange for a representative delegation from the sheepowners, dairy producers, and the Farmers' Union, to meet members of Cabinet; and place before them the present position of primary producers. A dance was held in the Methven Anglican Hall on Saturday, by the Methven Ladies' Hockey Club in honour of two of th6ir members, Misses Thelma Williams and. Maude Owen, who have been chosen to represent Canterbury in the "K" Cup tournament. Music for the dauce was supplied by Cook's Orchestra, extras being played by Miss Nora Owers, while Mr W. Grieve was M.C. Mr Davidson congratulated the Methven Club on its successes during the seasop, and especially on two of their members being selected for Canterbury representative honours. Mr Bishop congratulated the school team on its win and handed the cup to Miss Joan Schoon.
