MECHANICAL HARE
RACING.
FORMER LABOUR MINISTER QUESTIONED. (Received August 11th, 10.55 p.m.) SYDNEY, August 11. At the mechanical liaro enquiry J". Tully, a former Minister for Lands, denied the statements by Redmond and Barry that he had interested himself in the tin hare legislation. He added that he had never heard specific licenses discussed by the Lang Cabinet, of which he was a member. Whenever tin hares were mentioned by his constituents, of whom Barry was one, he was always careful to refer them to the Chief Secretary's Department, which dealt with the matter. Horsington, a member of Parliament for Broken Hill, denied having advised a former witness, Matthews, to see Frederick Swindell when spoken to about a license for Broken Hill. Referring to Krantz, Horsington said that Broken Hill had stood him (Krantz) for thirty years, and if it would stand for him 'it would stand for anything. _ J. Robinson, a hotelkeeper at Araudale, gave evidence that Swindell told him it would cost £I3OO as a procuration fee to get a license for Armidale. Witness said the sum was later modified to £IOOO, but even this "struck him as a bit over the fence," and he dropped The Royal Commissioner intimated that he did not think Tully had anything to answer, and released him from the proceedings. The hearing was adjourned.
BETTER REVENUE.
COMMONWEALTH RETURNS. NEW SOUTH WALES ALSO IMPROVES, SYDNEY, August 11. Official statements issued by the Commonwealth and State treasuries indicate buoyant receipts of revenue for July. The Federal revenue tor the mouth was £6,052,000, being £983,000 greater than the expenditure, and £658,000 greater than the revenue in July of last year, which in turn was £840,000 less than the expenditure for that month. There was therefore an improvement of £1,823,000 in last month's figures, compared with July, 1931. The New South Wales State revenue for July was £3,083,510, £613,965 more than July, 1931. The expenditure totalled £3,164,355, an increase of £254,207. Thus the position in July this year had improved by £359,758, compared with the same month last year. RAILWAY FREIGHTS. REDUCTIONS IN AUSTRALIA. SYDNEY, August 11. The Minister for Transport, Mr M. F. Bruxncr, has announced a reduction in railway freights on wool and livestock by 10 per cent. Store cattle will be curried at 5U per cent, bolow the.present schedule rates if handled in tram loads, and trucks aro supplied and lifted at the convenience of tno Department. DUTY ON SOVEREIGNS. SHIP'S STEWARD CHARGED. (Received August 11th, 7.35 p.m.) SYDNEY, August 11. .Detective Baker said that when he arrested Wince after the arrival of the Niagara ih July, Wince 6aid ne had no idea of the contents of the parcels in his possession. They were given to him by a man named George Washington in a Wellington hotel to deliver to persons in Bydney, who were to meet him in his cabin. Detective-Sergeant Tricklebank, ot Wellington, asked the court to order Wince's return to New Zealand in his custody, and the Magistrate complied with the request. .
RADIO BROADCASTING. NEW MANAGER APPOINTED. (Beceived August 11th, 7.35 p.m.) SYDNEY, August 11. Mr H. P. Williams has been appointed from 211 applicants to the position of general manager of the Australian Broadcasting Commission at a s al » r y of £2OOO a year. Mr Williams has had a long association with broadcasting, both as an announcer at 2FC and m an executive capacity. He also a journalist with an extensive knowledge of rural problems.
