RUGBY.

CANTERBURY UNION

RANTURLY SHIELD CONTEST.

'lo-morrow's Shield game between South Canterbury and Canterbury will bo another milestone in the history of this trophy. Canterbury, in the past, have been very near success against all provinces. In the twenty-second game of the series, played on September 10th, 1910, against Auckland, they were defeated by 6 points to 4 in a most exciting game. This took place at Alexandra Park, Harrison and Heywood scoring for Auckland and Dqcll, tlio Canterbury custodian, potting a field goal. Just before the Avar in 3914, at Xew Plymouth, when Taranaki were the holders, Canterbury again just missed the shield by C points to 5 in the thirtyfifth game. On this occasion AVMttington scored for Taranaki, and Stobikicked a penalty. Uassell crossed for Canterbury, Crawsbaw converting. South Canterbury's only other shield "amo away from Lancaster Park took place at Tiniaru on September 9th, 19:20, when Wellington took tho shield on tour and gave the southerners an opportunity. Tho holders, however, were successful by o'l points to I<s in the fit'ty-lirst game, and after defeating Otago were surprised T>y Southland and went down by 17 points to 6.

The tenuis in to-morrow's game arc vorv eveu. Tlie South Canterbury forwards average lost Sib, while tho hosiers' pack averages 13st (jib. On the other hand, the Canterbury backs average list 111b, while their opponents arc 21b lighter. Much depends on the display or the Canterbury forwards, and it' thev arc led successfully by Coltrcll and" Manchester they should hold the redoubtable pack of the challenger*. Perhaps the Canterbury instdes, Hollow, Times, and Oliver, may bo too good for their opponents, but the fact that South Canterbury have prevailed by a large margin in the last two games indicates that they will be worthy contenders for the shield. Tho following are the teams: —

RUGBY LEAGUE TEST. BRIGHT GAME IN PROSPECT. The second Eugby League Test match between the English touring team and the New Zealand representative team, to bo played at Monica Park to-morrow, is attracting a great deal of attention all over the Dominion, as "well as in Christchurch. The prospects are for a bright and fast game, and, -with a greatly improved side, New Zealand should give the visitors a difficult task to win. The New Zealand team will probably bo as follows, with several possible alterations: — Full-back: S. Watene. Three-quarters: C List A. E. Cooke, B. Davidson or P. Hart. Five-eighths: H. Brisbane, H. Hassan. Half-back: , A. Abbott. Forwards: Front Kow—J. Calder, AV. Stephenson, and G. Campbell. Second Row —B. Lawless, E. Hull, Breakaway —J. Amos. It is likely, however, that Cooko will play at flvo-eightha with Hassan, with Brisbane at centre. AVith one man to bo dropped, the ! English backs will bo as follows: — 1 " Full-back: J. Sullivan. Three-quarters: A. Ellaby, A. Atkinson, A. .1. Ristnan, 8. Smith. .Halves: .B. Evans, S. BrogiJon, E. Pollard. The JUnglish forwards will be chosen from the following:—J. F. Thompson, L. L. 'White,JJr.S r . Silcock, AN 7 . A. "Williams, J. Wright, M. Hodgson, AV. Horton, A. Fildes, K. Fender, and .T. Fcetham. The members of the English and New Zealand teams have been training solidly since their arrival in Christchurch and have formed two excellent combinations, which should be capable of giving good accounts of themselves to-morrow. The teams have been the guests of the managements of the Plaza 'and Jtegent Theatres, and also of tho racing and trotting clubs. It is likely that his Excellency the Governor-General, Lord Bledisloe, will attend the match to-morrow and that he will bo introduced to the players at half-time.
