♦ NEW ZEALAND TEAM. WESTERN AUSTRALIA DEFEATED 4 TO 1. (l!»ITEI» TRBSa ASSOCIATION—BT EMCTBW TKLISaBAI-H—COPyaiOHT ) (Received August 11th, 9.55 p.m.) SYDNEY, August 11. The Now Zealand hockey team played a strong Western Australian team in the- inter-State carnival competition today in ideal weather. The Westerners were expected to provide considerable opposition, as they possess a great forward line. The New Zealand backs, however, wore too sound to enable them to break through. Spiers played brilliantly and repulsed many dangerous attacks. Munro, at centro half, fed the New Zealand forwards splendidly, and there was great short corner hitting by Anthony, two of his shots finding tho net. Koid, playing with stitches over an eyo, was clover. Joblin, playing at left half, opened New Zealand's score with a flick shot, and Bay netted shortly after from a scramble in front of the goal. Thompson, a Westerner, tricked Moore nicely to score the only goal for his side. Tho game was fast and fairly even, and New Zealand were held-to their low score. Their average for tho tour now is D 8 goals for and 11 against. They tried hard to get two more to complete the century, but the opposition was too sound. The final scoro was 4to 1 in favour of New Zealand.
Queensland won the Noall Shield at the carnival, goinjgj through unbeaten. To-dny they beat Victoria by five goals to two.
