GREYMOUTH, August 11.

Mr J. 0. Brown, manager of the Wostport Coal Company, Ltd., at Westport, and Mrs Brown, are visiting Wellington. Mr W. Dixon, chief clerk at the Post Office, Westport, and Mrs Dixon, are on a holiday visit to Howera. Mrs E. Walton (Christchurch) is visiting relatives in Greymouth. Mr and Mrs A. Mockett (Westport) are spending a holiday in Greymouth. Mr D. Goodall, who has been visiting Dnnedin, has returned to Greymouth. Mr D. J. Wilson, son of Mr and Mrs G. Wilson, of Greymouth, is one of the four candidates from tho Canterbury College, nominated this year for the Bhodes Scholarships. Football. Tho final o'f the Lake Bruuner Rugby Shield competition was played at Bell < Hill, when tho Rum team defeated Bell Hill by 27 to 8. Miniature Rifle Shooting. The Grey Miniature Rifle Club held its oponing shoot for the club competi- , tion on Tuesday evening. S. Sharman won the hotty button with a good 69. Miss J. Hamilton won the women's button with 63. The best scorers were: S. Sharman 69, G. Roberts 68, L. Redway 68, T. Garth 68, E. R. Moss 68. In the women's competition, v Mrs C. Richardson was 6S, Mv.i Shuttlrworth 67, Miss J. Hamilton 66, Miss R. Cairney 66, and Miss M. Hamilton 66. Technical School Board. Only three nominations for the three vacancies on the Board of the Greymouth Technical High School have been received, those of Mrs Shuttleworth, Messrs W. Kyle and W. Blair. They have been declared duly elected. Continuous Frosts. The thirtieth consecutive frost at Hokitika was experienced yesterday. iTh .> days have been sunny. At Greymouth several heavy frosts have been experienced, during the period when the wind has been from the east. The long peroid of fine weather is still continuing. Gardening for Unemployed. The gardening scheme for unemployed is being taken up in tho "County of Wcstland, where potatoes are the chief item to be cultivated. Owing to general climatic conditions the West Coast is not regarded as suitable for gardening, in a general way, during the winter months. Prospecting at Ross About thirty men are employed in prospecting in the Ross district. A number of the men are inexperienced in gold seeking. Mr James Sunderland, an experienced dredgemaster, has been appointed to supervise the prospectors, and it is hoped by his leadership more success will be achieved than has been the case in the past.
