MR LANG BITTER.

A REMARKABLE SPEECH. SOCIALISATION OP CREDIT. (noit ora owk cobmspokbbxt.) SYDNEY, August 4. Since he •was relegated to the Opposition Mr J. T. Lang, nnder whose regime .New South Wales underwent a hectic period of government, or misgovernment, has been extraordinarily quiet; so much so that many people have asked themselves whether it is a case of still waters running deep. Sinee the elections which resulted in the overwhelming defeat of his Labour Party he has taken no apparent part in public affairs, but when he was entertained the other night by his eonsti- , tuents, he was forced into the position of having to speak, and he showed that he had lost none of his bitterness. He is still looking forward to the day when he will be able to force his notions o« the people. Mr Lang's first reference was to the Legislative Council, and it was far from complimentary to the Councillors. "If I could have got rid of those old birds upstairs," he said, "I would have shown what could have been done, and what should have been done. They think, because. we are defeated, that they have got away with it all. I can assure yon that there is a lot of history to be written yet. We failed by a little because the courage of some of our people failed to carry them through. You must remember I;hat you cannot play at politics. Labour must go the whole hog. If you play you are going to fail. ■ ilt is a fight, and a bitter fight, and next time you must use all your weapons. "Governments in Australia now are nothing more or less than organisations to collect taxes and pay the money away in interest. In the past few years financial institutions—and the banks are only the smallest and most unimportant of these —have lent more money to the Governments than there is in Australia. They have.gone off the gold standard. Their money now is just paper with some printers' ink, valued at about a halfpenny for two dozen. When I brought forward the goods standard, many of them, including some Labour politicians, . kicked up hell 'a delight over it. To-day they are trying to find a goods standard jj* Ottawa. preferences at Ottavra liare'afl gone by the board. England will not be able to* help Australia in the matter of meat, because the £400,000,000 of English money invested in the Argentine binds her. "They have to try and find a new currency at Ottawa.-, To do this they will have to dp.what we want to do here—to nationalise or socialise credit. Once that step is taken the resb will be easy. This is the first step towards- prosperity. If New South Wales had done it the rest of -Australia would have followed snit, and then the world would have done likewise." * Kef erring to National Anthems, Mr Lang said: "Let other countries sing their 'Stars and Stripes for Ever' and their 'God Save the King.' Our National anthem is 'Advance Australia. 7 Stand and sing it with your hat oft*. If the other fellow does not take his hat off you' know what to do." i A voice: Knock it off, Mr Lang: Too right. -
