ACCIDENTS.
LORRY AND TRAIN COLLIDE. RELIEF WORKER INJURED. (rniss association tklegrim.) HASTINGS, July 28. A relief worker, Leslie Francis Payne, was seriously injured this morning when'a lorry carrying thirty unemployed to relief works collided with a goods train at tho Southampton street level crossing. T. T. O'Sullivan was 6lightly injured. All the other men escaped unhurt. The lorry had almost crossed the line when the collision took place. The rear of the vehicle was badly shattered. Payne, who is a married man, was taken to the Hastings Memorial Hospital. He was found to bo badlv injured about the head and to bo suffering from concussion.
FINGER CRUSHED. (rKISS ASSOCJATIOH TH.EQRAM.) AUCKLAND, July 28. Instructed by wireless to return to Capo Maria, the Government lighthouse steamer Matai there found that the assistant lightkeeper, a man named Lcighton, had had a finger badly crushed in a winch while hauling up stores that the steamer had left. He was brought to Onehunga and taken to hospital to-day. TWO YOUTHS HURT. (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEORAIf.) AUCKLAND, July «*• Two youths were injured, one seriously, in a level crossing collision between a motor-van and » suburban train near Takanini station this afternoon. The driver of the van, Ronald Leslie Watson, aged 18, of Papakura, received a fracture of two ribs, laceration of a leg, and shock, and was admitted to a private hospital at Papa: kura. His companion, William Neill Kidd, aged 17, of Papakura, received head injuries arid a fracture of a leg. He was removed to the Auckland Hospital. His condition is reported to be serious.
