CANCER CAMPAIGN

RESEARCH WORK AT MEDICAL SCHOOL. NATURE, DIAGNOSIS, AND TREATMENT. (t'RESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) DUNEDIN, July 2S. A. meeting of the Otago and Southland Division of tlio New Zealand branch of the British Empire Cancer campaign was held in the Town Hall to-day. Sir Louis Barnett presided. It was reported that sinee the campaign was instituted in Otago and Southland in November, 1929, the sum of £24,400 had been subscribed through the generosity of the citizens of Otago and Southland. No further appeal for funds was contemplated in the meantime, as tho money now in hand was quite satisfactory for the present. A full statement of tho financial position of the local division was made and approved by tho meeting. / Clinic Proving Useful. A report was submitted 1 by Dr. Dath, explaining the work of the local consultation clinic and tho growing Success of the clinic, which is bocoming increasingly useful in earlier diagnosis and more effective treatment. Special emphasis was. laid on the importance of prompt notification, as shown by the records of attacking tho disease in the early stages. The records already studied indicated that the great majority of cancers in accessible positions, such as on the surface of the body, were curable by present surgical and radiation methods, while improved results in the moro difficult class of internal cancers were anticipated from tho laboratory researches in progress at the Dunedin Medical School, under the direction of Dr. Begg. Br. Begg's Work. A report dealing with his work was submitted by Dr. Begg, who is conducting in Dunedin researches which he classified under three headings: (1) Research into tho nature of cancer. (2) Research for the diagnostic basis of and | (3) Research into treatment. j Sir Louis Barnett was re-elected chairman of the division.
