OBITUARY.
MR ANGUS HORSEY. ' Mr Angus Horsey, of Alleiiton. MidCanterbury, died yesterday at tlio age of 65. Mr Horsey was well known throughout the Ashburton County for many years, and lor 25 years served on local bodies m the district. Air Horsey's health iiad been tailing lor the past twelve months, and lie had boen confined to bed lor six weeks. Mr Horsey was born at •■Annandale," Hawarden, on January liili, 1867, and was the elder ton of Mr auu Mrs E. Horsey, lu 18V3, Ins lamer moved to the AN est Coast. About eight years later the family returned to Canterbury and took up land in the Ashburton County. Alter leaving school, Mr Horsey started farming with ills father at AYillow by aiul Hinds, and they aequiied the Allord Estate homestead block in 1904. O'l the death of his father in 1917, Mr Horsey carried on the farm with his brother, Mr E. B. Horsey, until ho retired into Allenton two years ago. Mr Horsey's service on public bodies in the Ashburton county commenced with his election to the Upper Ashburton Itoad Board in May, lUOo, and lie retained his seat up to the time of his death, being chairman for the past eleven years. He was elected as tlio representative of the Upper Ashburton riding- on tlio Ashburton County Council in 1917, and in addition to being chairman for two years from 192G, he represented that body at various conferences and on ' a number of other organisations, including the Ashburton Chamber ol Commerce. Sir.co December, 1920, l|,; had lieen a representative of the County on the Ashburton Hospital Hoard* and was chairman for two years from June, 1930. At the institution of the Ashburton Power Board i" 1922. Mr Horsey took one ol Iho count] v seats, and remained a_ member until last May, when lie did not seek re-election owing to failing health. His interest in education commenced nearly '3O years a.no, when he joined the Ashburton Forks School Committee, of which he was chairman for several terms. Last year lie was elected tho Asliburton Cuimly Council's representative on the Ashburton Technical School Hoard o! Ma nagei During his chairmanship of the Hospital Board, Mr Horsey was a delegate on the Ashburton Unemployment Committee. . ... . As part of his farming activities. Air Horsey was an advoea'.o for improvement and'careful selection of breeding stock. When at Willowbv he joined tho Ashburton Agricultural and Pastoral Association. lie took an active part in the arrangements ip r all shows, and was president of too Association in 19PJ. being subsequently elected a life member. He was a member of t'ne Ashburton branch ot the Farmers' Union, and had been a member of the Mid-Cantcrbiirv 1 iovineial Executive since its formation in 1920. He was a keen follower ot racing and trotting, and was a member of lioth the Asliburton County Trotting and Racing Clubs. Ho was a member of the Thistle Masonic Lodae. „ About five years ago, Mr Horsey, accompanied bv .Mrs Hoi soy, made an extended toi.'r of England and America, and lie brought back valuable information on tho roading conditions in those countries. The flags at tho Ashburton County Council office. Technical School and the Ashburton Club were flow at hallmast yesterday out of respect to -Mr Horsey. Mr Horsev is suivived by his widow, n brother, "Mr E. 13. Horsev (Alford Estate), and five sisters Mesdames A. Cass (Willowbv'), E. Stoddart (Eillelton). H. Osborne and Misses K. and V. Hor=ey (Allord Estate). MR JOHN FIELD.
The death occurred mi Saturday, ft The ape of 83 years, of Mr John Field, well known in various parts of Australia. and New Zealand as a social worker. Ho was born at JBrize N orion, Oxford, and cam© to New Zealand in 1878. Ho was an officer in the Salvation Army for a number of years, amongst his early appointments being that of captain in charge of the Christchurcii Citadel when it was opened in 1880. He also took part in social work in Australia for tore years. Mr Field was keenly interested in the Prohibition movement and acted as organiser for the New Zealand Alliance at several polls. He was a local preacher of lons standing, and during the war was appointed a home missionary for the Methodist Church at Pictou, subsequently filling similar positions at Edendale, River ton, and Itakaia. He was a member of the Riccarlon Methodist Church at the time of his death. Mr Field married twice, his second w ; ie surviving him, also two daughters, Mrs tS. Adkins, and Mrs E. Litchfield, and one son, Mr W. L. Field. There are 10 grandchildrcu and one greatgrandchild. The funeral took place on Monday at the Sydenham cemetery. There was a short service at the house and also at the graveside, conducted by the Rev. J. F. Jack, the Revs. G. E. Ward, T. W. Yealie, and J. Harris assisting. Wreaths were sent by the Greater Cbristchurch United Preachers' Association, AA .C.T.U., G.F.O. Garage, Messrs 0. and L. Baker, Mrs and Miss Russell, Bro. The death has occurred, after a long iilness, of Sir William Mi-Plierson; former Premier of Victoria, aged (J7 years. [The Hon. Sir William Murray Mcpherson, K.8.E., M.L.A., was born in Melbourne in 1565. Ho was a member of the Legislative Assembly for Hawthorn from 1913 to 1930, and Premier and Treasurer of Victoria 1928-tD. Hewas governing director of the McPherson Proprietary, Ltd., merchants, tu Melbourne, Sydney, and Adelaide, and formerly Commissioner of the .Melbourne Harbour Trust for 12 years and president of the Melbourne Chamber of Commerce. He was knighted in 1923.]
MR P. W. AITKEN. [THE PEESS Special Serriee.] DUNEDIN, July 27. The death occurred to-day after a brief illness of Mr Peter "Walker Aitken, one of the most brilliant students wlio have passed through Otago University in the past decade. Mr Aitken, who was born in 1903, was educated at the Otago Boys' High. School, of which he was dux in 1921. Entering Otago University ■as the holder of a scholarship, he "took a science course and in 1923 was awarded the Sir George Grey Scholarship in Experimental Science, obtaining the degree of M.Sc. being awarded the Lubecki Scholarship for Applied Science in the following year. Tn 11127 he was the Otago nominee for the Rhodes scholarship, and he devoted the two succeeding years to flax research in. tlio Manawntu district for the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. lie went to England in 1930 and for twelve months studied chemical engineering at the University of London. On his return to New Zealand he was appointed assistant-manager and chief chemist of the Dominion Fertiliser Company's works at Ravcnsbourne, a position he held at the time of liis death. As an athlete he was a member of the University first fifteen and represented Otago in boxing at the annual inter-Universitv tournament. Mr Aitken was married oji'y four months ago to Dr. Pauline Witlierow, a graduate or' Otago University.
