BEECH TIMBER.
THE ENGLISH ENQUIRY. ACTION BY MILLERS. [THE PRESS Special Service.] DUXEDIX, July 27. An announcement was made recently that certain British motor interests at Home were making enquiries with a view to placing an order in the Dominion for a supply of nine million feet of beech timber. In view of the stimulus which, the plaeing of such a large order would impart to the timber knd allied industries of the Dominion, those connected with beech milling in Otago and Southland have taken the matter up with the greatest interest and enthusiasm, and have set about the task of convincing English consumers that their requirements can be satisfactorily fulfilled by New Zealand. They propose to send Home at the expense of the industry orio of their own nominees, provided that, the Government will arrange to have him accompanied by the forestry official who so expertly handled the export arrangements with Australia in 1930. v Mr Thomas More, of Rivcrton, the largest beech operator in the Dominion, has been selected to represent the/milling interests, and to-morrow two of the leading men connected with the industry in Otago and Southland will leave for Wellington to place details of the proposal before Cabinet with a view to enlisting the support of the Governnunt in an endeavour to secure for the Dominion a market for beech timber which will stimulate the industry and at the same time open up a new and valuable avenue of export trade at a time when thia is more than ever desirable.
