NORTH CANTERBURY.

_ *_ RANGIORA. A children's fancy dress dance was held in the Parish Hall recently in aid of St. John's Anglican Sunday School funds. A happy time was spent, and the proceeds amounted to £2 13s Cd. The anniversary celebrations of the Methodist Church wove concluded on Thursday evening, when the annual statement of tho Trust was presented, followed by a concert and social ovening. Although showing a slight deficit, the statement was considered satisfactory. During the evening vocal and instrumental items were given by members of the choir, assisted by friends, in charge of Mr A. Lane. The Be v. S. Henderson presided. The members of tho ■ North Canterbury Football Club paid a surprise visit to the home of Mr E. Inch, on Wednesday evening. Mr Inch is a member of tho North Canterbury Football Club and was married recently. To mark the occasion, the president, Mr Cobden Cox, on behalf of the club, presented Mr Inch with a crvstal salad service.

KAIKOURA. The Presbyterian Church was, well filled on Thursday night, when Miss Alma Flower gave an organ recital in aid of tho local effort to secure funds to assist tho unemployed. Every item on the programme was received with appreciation. The organ numbers comprised : "Bells Across tho Meadows (Ketelby), "Hungarian Danco (Brahms), "When Other Lips" (}™ie), "Andantino" (Lemare), "Sally (Haines), "Souvenir" (Franz Drdla), "Cavatina" (Raff), "In a Monastery Garden" (Ketelby), "A Perfect Day (C. Jacobs Bond), and "Minuet in G (Beethoven). Mrs L. Kennedy sang "When All Was Young," Mrs A. B. Clark "Sunshine and Rain," and Mr J. H. Sherris "The Toilers." Mr G. fl. Bartlctt gave two monologues, "His First Long Trousers" and "Earth's Last Picture": Messrs W. A. Nelson, G. Taylor, T. Taylor, and E. N. Flower sang tho quartets, "Three Crows" nnd "Sleighing Song," and the Rev. F. and Mrs Robertson the duet, "Farewell." Dr. Withers thanked Miss Flower for a. splendid evening's entertainment, which had been given in a worthy cause, nssisting to provide funds for those out of work. Ho believed the depression would prove a blessing in disguise, in'thnt the peoplo would ho brought into closer relation socially and otherwise. He also thanked those who had assisted Miss Flower, not forgetting t!m hoy behind the soeno. Master Jack Harris. The l?ev. F. Robertson also expressed his appreciation nnd thanked thoso present for attending in such Inrgc numbers. The amusement evening conducted bv tho Ladies' TTookev Club, held at ;ho Band Room on Thursday night, war well attended. Mr H. Wilkinson wns the winner nf tho men's prize and Mrs Of. Smith the women's nrize. A mpotintr of tho County Council will he held on Wednesday next for the purpose of electino: a ehrirman.

WAIPARA. Tho soci;il evening which was held on Wednesday, in aid of the Red Cross Society, was a groat success. Competitions wore won by Miss J. Kilty, Mrs Pot ton, Mr Gainsford, and Mr Goldien. Music for the dancing was supplied by Mr Watkins, Misses J. Ferguson and J. Kilty. During the evening Sister Christian spoko on Red Cross work and thanked tho people present for their support. Tho proceeds amounted to £,~ } lis. Supper was provided by the local Red Cross Committee. OXFORD. The annual social and the dance promoted, by tho Oxford Agricultural and Pastoral Association, for the presentation of cups at tho recent Show, were held on Wednesday night. Music was supplied by Miss S. Knowles, Miss J. Baxter and Mr E. Knowles playing extras. Mr A. Gainsford contributed songs. The cups were presented by Mrs Skurr, tho wife of tho president.'

HORNBY. Mrs li. ltobb (Hornby) has hit for Rakaia. Miss E. Kemptliorne (Hornby) left on Tuesday for Temuka. Miss J. Manson (Hornby) is visiting her aunt at New Brighton for the holidays Miss N. Greenaway, of Spreydon, is tho guest of Mrs R. Murdoch (Hornby).

MARSHLAND. The finances of the Marshland Sports Club continue to grow, and in the near future it is hoped, with the help of the ratepayers, to obtain a section of land suitable for a public park. The School Committee has again taken advantage of the No. 5 Scheme, and workmen are engaged in trenching, stumping, and levelling tho remainder of the school playground. Mr F, Slade has offered the uso of his paddock for school games while the playing ground is being improved. Some hundreds of tons of onions have been railed from nearbv stations to Lyttelton for Australia. A meeting of tho Canterbury Onion Growers' Association was held in tho Marshland Hall. At the conclusion or the ordinary business a discussion took place on the question of staging a district exhibit in the forthcoming Winter Show. Those present favoured the proposal, and it was decided to call a public meeting of all interested.

DARFIELD. A public meeting, which was convened "by Mrs J. R. Cullen and Mrs IX McMillan, and to which the women oi the Darfield district were invited, was held in the lounge of the hall, The meeting was well attended. Mrs D. McMillan explained that the meeting had been called with a view to forming a committee to assist in the raising qf funds for the proposed Bowling, Croquet, and Tennis Club. Mrs C. EReid presided. It was decided to form a committee, and Mrs D. McMillan was elected president, and Mrs HEdbroolce, secretary, with a working committee of about twenty members. A sewing guild is to be formed immediately in connexion with a pro-: posed fair, which is to be held later in the year. The first meeting is to take the form of a scrap afternoon, and the vonipn are to brinji nil useful scraps suitable for making into articles for sale. The offer of two sewing machines was received. SPRINGSTON. The social in connexion with the Wesley Guild was held in the Methodist Schoolroom. The evening was spent in games and competitions. A recitation was given by Miss Mary Perymaii, it solo by Miss Muriel Mbtmee. and readings by Messrs Alio and Whatman. A competition was

won by Mr L. Moore. Miss I. Mutton, was M.C. The Sunshine Club held the fortnightly meeting in the Public Hall. Mrs E. L. Nettle presided. Competitions for the best made from a SOlb flour bag resulted as follows: Section 1: Joyce Hidden 1 (dress), Kitty McLaren, Mary McLaren, Jean Marshall, equal, 2 (tray-cloths): section II.: Elaine Bailey 1 (duchess set), Muriel Mounee 2 (duchess set): section TIT.: Cecily Milne 1, Nancy Heinisch 2, Moimce 3 (aprons).
