SCHOOL BUILDINGS.
REDUCED MAINTENANCE GRANT. Advice has been received by the Canterbury Education Board that Cabinet has decided to reduce by £20,000 the, grant for tho maintenance -of primary school buildings in the Dominion. The Board is preparing a/list of the requirements of the district, in accordance with a request from the Education Department. After considering the claims of all Boards, the Department will decide it's allocation of the money available. "It seems that those Boards which open their mouths widest will get the most from the Government,." said Mr C. E. Kirk, secretary of the Canterbury Education Board. "Those which have looked after their property may suffer. It might have been better to apportion the money available pro rata." With over 400 schools in its area, tho Canterbury Board is the second largest in the Dominion, being second only to Auckland. At present a survey is being made by the Board's foremen so that the necessary information may be provided. The work- entailed is of some magnitude—the majority of the schools will have to be visited. The only maintenance work being done by the Board at present is that which is absolutely essential, for <the funds do not permit more to be done. j The matter, is to bo considered by the Board at its meeting to-day.
