ties, e.g., motor-cars, radios, furniture, which can be provided by individual action. • The position to-day is that in the past a considerable proportion of our man power and natural resources (to strip the problem of its monetary aspect) (has been expended in providing these public utilities. Vet we have available more man power than we know what to do with. Why should we consider ourselves extravagant in utilising some of it in providing public facilities, which, nnliko private expenditure, react to the benefit of every member of the community? A policy of rigid economy and highest mechanical efficiency can only load to further demoralising unemployment. What we need is to expand * rather than to contract the nature and extent of our activities. In a world of mass production, teeming with an abundance of all our requirements, it is absurd to stress economy. Cannbt we at least clarify the issue by admitting that the crux of our present trouble is monetary, and concentrating on this aspect. In Britain, France, and America the closest attention is being paid to various schemes for solving the problems of price control, yet in New Zealand the Government and the Chambers of Commerce can only cry "Economise.*' —Yours, etc., CIVIL ENGINEER.
