COMPETITION IN CHARACTER.
TO THE rDITOR OF THE PEES 1 ? Sir, —I would like to draw attention to the decision given in the second place in Class 36, "Recitation in Character," which seems to me so unusual as to call for some explanation by the judge. The award was given to a competitor who, dressed as one character, attempted to portray three distinctly different persons. It is quite obvious that if one character waß properly characterised by being dressed for, then the other two were not. If a departure from a "Recitation in Character" be permitted, then all competitors should be notified that Buch departure is allowable. —Yours, etc., NON-COMPETITOE. May 9th, 1932. [When this letter was referred to him, the judge of the elocution section, Mr Clement May, said that the character work on the whole in the class mentioned was very weak, and he based his decision on the cleverness of the girl •who was given the award. She haddone so well, he said, that she was worth consideration.]
