SIR 3AMES PARR'S VIEWS. I / (rRE3S ASSOCIATIOK TBL.EOBAM.) I WELLINGTON, May 10. | Speaking at the annual meeting of I the Wellington branch of tho League of Nations Union, Sir James Parr said , that the League was "in a sense the | most important body in the world. It ih tiio sounding board of world opin- : ion. If it fails, there is no hope. The ' League alone stands between us and anotuor Armageddon, which with tho scientific weapons of war will destroy civilisation. But the League has not failed, it has created a" new collectivo spirit among tho nations. It has done some good work. It has existed only twelve years, too • short a time in which to judge it. "How can one expect that iu twelve years racial hatreds and fears existing for centuries can be eliminated? li will take time, perhaps a long time, but I am not without hope. The League could stop all small wars even to-d;<v. with its moral pressure and its threat of financial and economic punishment of the guilty parties. And in great -wars, by delaying the outbreak and by organising, public opinion against tho offenders, it could do much to prevont a threatened struggle. The League's humanitarian, social, and financial "operations have done much in a docade to improve the world's condition. Even if it has failed to bring about great disarmament, the world cannot afford to do without it." MINING DISPUTE. ♦ MEN REFUSE TO RETURN TO WORK. (FKJCSS ASSOCIATIOK TBLEOBAK.) | AUCKLAND, May 10. A serious view is taken by Mr A. Robinson, president of the Northern Miners' Union, of the refusal of tlje Hikurangi coal miners to return to work unloss the company withdraws the uotLes of dismissal. Mr Rrobinson said that since returning from Hikurangi he had endeavoured to persuade the presidentof the Coal Owners' Association to proceed with the negotiations for a new agreement as far as the Waikato men were concerned. The owners, however, were not prepared to reopen negotiations until tho Hikurangi men resumed. "We have again appealed to them to return to work, pointing out that in the event of their remaining out collective bargaining will cease in the industry." said Mr Robinson. "The delegates who took part in tho conference with the owners have returned to their branches and will call meetings tlm week and recommend that appeals bo made to the Hikurangi men io resume work, and thus leave the road clear for negotiations for a new agreement." Meanwhile the owners have been asked to continue the present agreement beyond the oxpirati6n date, May I6th, but nothing definite has been decided. Receipts from passenger fares on the Atlantic liners trading between Europe and North America are estimated to have dropped by £10,000.000, or nearly £1,000,000 a month, during last year.
