PERSONAL. (SPECIAL TO TSE FBESS.) GREYMOUTH, February 15. Professor Easterfield, Director of the Cawthron Institute, Nelson, and Mr Bigg, agricultural expert, are visiting Westport. At a meeting of the Uoefton Trotting Club, Mr D. Mines, who is leaving the Reefton district, was the recipient of a case of pipes from the committee, The presentation was made by Mr F. Lockington, president. Captain W. Straehan, who has been visiting friends in CoMen, returned on Saturday to Palmerston North. Mr H, Bowman, of the Post and Telegraph Department, Wellington, ,is visiting his mother in Greymouth. Miss M. Dennehy, who has been visiting Mr and Mrs F. Denncliy, "returned on Saturday to Timaru.

Mr' A. Harrison, who Ims boon visiting Cliristchurch, returned on Saturday. Mr and Mrs R. lleffcrnan leave tomorrow on holiday to Timaru. Misses A. and Joan Wormington, who have been visiting Christchurch, returned on Saturday to Hokitika. Mr W. Robertson, secretary of the Greymouth Master Bakers' Association, loft to-day for Palmerston North, where ho will attend the Master Bakers' Conference. Obituary. The death occurred at the Grey Hospital on Saturday of Mr Reginald William McDonald, aged 29 years. Mr McDonald was a son of Mr and Mrs Peter McDonald, of Haw*,ra, and batd resided in Greymouth for the past four and a half years. He is. survived by his widow and two young children. Wedding. The wedding was celebrated on Saturday at Holy Trinity Church, by Archdeacon Jermyn, of Rose, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs E. Gallop, Cobden, nnd William, soil ot' Mrs and tlie late Mr W. Phillips, of Greymouth. The bride wore an aikle-length frock of

white satin with-hat and shoes to tone, and carried a bouquet of pastel shades. Miss Lillian Steel attended as bridesmaid, aud wore an ankle-length frock of blue crepe do chine with hat to match. Mr James Olsen was bc&t man. After the reception, Mr and Mrs Gallop left by car on their honeymoon. Bowling. The West Coa'st championship singles were concluded on Saturday afternoon when J. Breeze, of Ilokitika, was the victor, being the winner in each round, beating Leach. (Eunanga)J 27-10; Whibley (Greymouth), 19-10; and Floyd (Reefton), 20-17. At the conclusion of the games, the Champion of Champions' Cup was presented to Mr Breeze by Mr James Emg, president of the West Coast Centre, Endurance Swim. At the Kunanga Baths on Saturday, Mrs E. Fraser, who' recently recorded an endurance swim of six hours, broke her own record by swimming for seven hours continuously. She left the water unaided and showed no sign of distress. She was congratulated by the Mayor of Kunanga (Mr B. McTaggart).

Swimming. The series of swiming races held in the Municipal Baths yesterday rosulted as follows:—■ Men's' 50 yards (final) —IC. Griifen 1, Wright 2. Intermediate Boys' 50 yards handicap—lt. Quinn 1, W. O'-Loary 2. Relay Race—Bowman, Bunt, Sharp, and Miss Galbraith, 1. Four teams competed. Cricket. Yesterday's cricket fixtures were played in ideal weather with grounds in good condition. The knock-out competitions were advanced a further stage in both A and B divisions. At Omoto, United B defeated Star and secured a three-point win by an innings and 23 runs. United compiled 259 (Rapley 56, Gilbert 46, Scott 35, Freatis 34). Star scored 146 in their first innings (Kerr 61), and 86 in their second innings (Ingram 46). At Runanga, Marist beat Runanga by 19 runs on the first innings, Runanga scored 8S in their first innings (Wilson 17), Marist responded with 107 runs (Morris 19, Blackaby 18, Clarke 17). In tlJeir second strike Runanga made 64

(Wilson 17). Marist were set to score 47 runs in 12 minutes, and had 28 on tlie board for one wicket, when time was called. In the B division, Brunner maintained good form by beating Kamaka, at Kamaka. Brunner in their first innings maka' replied with 54 (Hogarth 11). In their second strike, Brunner made only 54 (Tibbies 13), and Kamaka 89 (Mullins 2(5). At Camerous, Brunner defeated the home team. In their first innings Camerons made 83 (Dalkie 42 not out, Nissen 14). Brunner made 160 (J'ohnston 48, Kitto 32, McNoisli 30, Hunt 25). Camerons made only 42 in their second strike (Dalkie 11). Tennis. Yesterday a team from St. Columba Tennis Club, Greymouth, journeyed to Hokitika, and played a tennis match with St. Mary's, Columba winning by 12 sets and 94 games to St. Mary's C sets and 74 games. State Mines Picnic. The State Collieries' annual picnic was held on Saturday at Hokitika,

when about 900 were conveyed from Runanga by two special trains. The weather was perfect and the day was spent in sports. Tho State Collieries' band accompanied the excursion. The Kokiri picnic was held at McLean Park Greymouth, on Saturday, some 70 being present, all enjoying the means of entertainment provided by the Park committee. Golden Jubilee. A meeting of citizens of Hokitika was hold on Friday evening to consider what steps should be taken fittingly to recognise the fifty years' service to tho WestJand Hospital Boajd of Mr J. J. Breeze, sen. On the motion of the Mayor Mr G. A. Perry, it was decided to make Mr Breeze a presentation of a purse and an address, recognising liis long service to the town, as a member of the various local bodies. Mr Breeze has been a member of the Westland Hospital Board since March 16th 1882 and it is proposed to hold the function recogmsmg his services to Hokitika on March 16th.
