(Received January 18th, 7 p.m.)

LONDON, January IS

The Geneva correspondent of the "Daily Mail" says the International Labour Office will shortly issue a warning against an undue expectation of an early recovery of world trade. It will state that even if, as some think, the cyclical depression has touched bottom, it is still too early to predict an improvement.

Great Britain, where unemployment is steadily falling, is the one nation apparently improving. French unemployment has increased over 500 per cent, comparod with 1930. Accepting tho official figures which arc far below the actual total, unemployment has increased in Germany by 34 per cent. In Italy the increase is 63 per cent., in Poland 24 per cent., and in Belgium 118 per cent. The report estimates that the European totul of unemployed is 9,370,000. In the United States tho total of unemployed i 3 estimated at 10,000,000. On January 22nd, 1931, the International Labour Office at Geneva issued a statement of the unemployed throughout the world. Tho total was approximately 20,000,000, of whom 11,000,000 were in Europe. The aggregate was double that of January, 1930, nnd included:— United States, over . . 5,000,000 Germany . . .. 4,500,000 Great Britain . . 2,500,000 Italy .. .. 500,000 Japan . . . . 400,000 Poland . . .. 200,000 Czechoslovakia . . 150,000 It was reported about a year ago that tho actual extont of unemployment in France was 250,000, while another 250,000 were working on short time. In July last it was announced officially in France that 31 per cent, of tho registered workers were on broken time. At tho end of the Canadian summer the Ministry of Labour reported 530,000 men unemployed. It has been stated in Australia that the number of unemployed trade unionists toward the end of last year was ovor 100,000. I
