BRITISH INDUSTRY.
IMPROVEMENT IN EMPLOYMENT. (issmsn official wireless. > i Received January ISth, 5.5 p.m.) RUGBY, January 17. Statistics prepared by the Ministry for Labour show that the improvement in employment which began at the end of September continued up to Christmas. The improvement was, in fact, greater than the figures show, because therewas in many industries, notably in the cotton and woollen textile trades and in coal mining, a fuller amount of employment for those who were working. It is estimated that in the four weeks ended December 21st the total number of insured workers actually in employment in Great Britain rose by 82,000. Improvement occurred in 74 of 101 industry groups in which tho statistics are analysed. During 1931 the total number of unemployed in the cotton industry was almost half.
