FIRE BRIGADE CONTEST.
INTER-SEASIDE COMPETITION. The annual inter-seaside Fire Brigade contest between the Sumner, Lyttelton, and Now Brighton Brigades was held at St. Leonard's square, Sumner, on Saturday afternoon. In spite of unfavourable weather there was a large number of spectators'. The Hall Cup for the one-man coupling event was won by Sumner, which also won the cup presented by Lieutenant Jones, o{ Lyttelton, for the highest aggregate points. Sumner also won the inter-borough contest against New Brighton. The Mayor of SumnSr (Mr W. H. Nicholson) welcomed the visitors. The results were as follows: — One-inan Coupling—Sumner, 50 l-ssec, 1; sec, 3. Two-men Disabled —New Brighton, 39 l-sse'c, 1; Sumner, 39 2-ssec, 2;- Lyttelton, 41sec, 8. Three Men Straight—Sumner A, 34sec, 1 ; Sumner B, 37sec, 2; Lyttelton, 40sec, 3. Five Men Flat—Sumner, 40 l-ssec, 1; Lyttelton, 42 2-SBCC, 2. The officials were: Supt. Geo. Harper, Fireman H. Lublow, and ex-Fire-man H. Cockle; starter, Mr S. Hood; examiners, Foreman J. R. Williams, ex. Supt. VV. Sherwood; disc judge. Fireman J. Lardner; ground marshal, Branchman W. Carter; judge, ex. Deputy Supt. W. Juriss. In the evening the visitors were entertained at a smoke concert. The Superintendent of the Sumner Volunteer Brigade. (Mr G. Harper) presided. He welcomed the visitors and thanked them for making the contest a success. He also thanked the performers for their services. Superintendent Carson (Lyttelton) .returned thanks on behalf of the visitors. The toast list was as follows: "The King," "Canterbury Provincial Fire Brigades' Association," "The Officials," "The Visitors," "The Sumner Volunteer Fire Brigade." ■ Items were given by Messrs Cummings, Moran, Lawrence, Terx-ell, Woods, and Counor. and Fireman J. Lardner.
