PERSONAL. (special to the mess.) GREYMOUTH, December 13. Mr F. M, Smythe left to ; day on a visit to Wellington. . Mr and Mrs J. W. Dickson loft yesterday on holiday to Christehurch. Messrs F. Simmonds, J. Quinn, and J. Shaffrey returned yesterday from Christehurch. Miss 0. Lord, matron of the Grey Hospital, left yesterday on annual holiday to the North Island. Mr J. (VBrien, M.P., left yesterday for Wellington. Misses Irene and Jessie Reedy left yesterday on a holiday trip to Wolliugton. Mr T. Hatch, formerly of the staff of the "Hokitika Guardian," who has joined the editorial staff of the "Grey River Argus," was met by the members of St. Mary's Club at Hokitika and presented with a wallet. The members oi! the choir of St. Mary ' Church presented him with a fountain pen. Mr and Mrs W. McLeod left to-day on a holiday visit to Wanganui. Mr E. H. Hayward, of Gisborne, is visiting the West Coast. Licensing Committee. A sitting of the' Westland Licensing Committee was held on Thursday, Mr F. McGregor presiding in the absence of the chairman, Mr W. Meldrum, S.M. Transfers affecting the Club, Hokitika, Union, and Golden Eagle Hotels, Greymouth, were granted. ; Inquest. The inquest concerning the death of David Moore, of Reefton, was concluded on Thursday before Mr W. B, Auld, Coroner. After hearing evidence, the Coroner gave a verdict that Moore met, his death at Reefton on October 10th as a result of a fractured skull, there being insufficient evidence ito indicate whether a blow or fall i caused the fracture. School Belay Races. Mr Gerald Perotti, Italian consular agent in Greymouth, has presented a silver-mounted shield as a trophy for a schools' relay race, for scholars of primary schools in the Grey, and Westland districts, in the annual relay race held in. connexion with the Karoro Sports Club sports. The trophy was this year awarded to tho Marist School. A silver cup, presented previously, by Mr Perottr, for the* same event, was won outright by tho Grey Main School team. Deer Stalkers. The number of applications this season for deer-stalkers' blocks in the Westland Acclimatisation Society's area show a considerable reduction compared with those of past seasons. Some English deer stalkers who had previously applied for. blocks have advised the Society of their inability to visit the Dominion this year. . Colonel Swayne is the only English 'Stalker expected to Visit Westland. Aerodrome Site. • Matters are in train for the establishment -of. an aerodrome on a site at South HSkitika, leased at a nominal rent by the AgriftUtural Department for t&e--purpose. It ;is intended to plough <fhe tract, which is thirty acres in extent and has already been cleared. The matter will be dealt with by the Westland County Counci at its next meeting, in view of the piossible establishment of aerial mail services between --Wellington and Hokitika, via Nelson and' "Westport. Waimakariri Bridge. . ,' The Minister for Public Works has advised the Greymouth ' Chamber .of Commerce that enquiries were being made to ascertain the possibility of an early commencement with the erection of the Waimakariri. bridge. The Main Highways Board, under whose jurisdiction the bridge came, Was not in a financial position at present to undertake the wofk. Grey Main School. A meeting of the Grey Main School Committee was held on Friday evening, the chairman (Mr R. 'Barrowman) presiding. v The dental Officer, Miss -K. M: Thompson, reported that there had been 277 •= operatibns for the month, 23 newpatients having been treated. The committee decided to support the. suggestion,-of .the -Master. The Canterbury Education Board wrote confirming the appointment of Mr E. J. Tempero as assistant master to the Grey Main School, to take up duty on February Ist, 1932. It was decided to request the headmaster to confer with the Superintendent of the Grey Fire /Brigade regarding lessons in fire prevention for the school children. . Regarding earthquake damage to the Main School, which was still unrepaired, it was reported that Mr O'Brien, M.P., had "taken the matter up with the Education Department, and had received advice that Mr T. B. Strong would visit Greymouth on Tuesday or Wednesday next and inspect the building. - , Automobile Association. The Greymouth branch pf the Canterbury Automobile Association met on Friday evening, the president (Dr. W, McKay) presiding ovpr a good attendance. The president reported that slips on the Marsden-Greonstone road had been cleared and the road was now open. He advised motorists to take the trip from the Kumara side thus saving an upgrade climb on this side. The Public Works Department wrote complaining that a motorist had been abusive to a worker on the Otira road. The number of tho car was supplied. It was found that the owner was not a member of the Association, and it was decided, with the approval of the Public Works Department, to hand the complaint to the traffic inspector to deal with. - , It was reported that new signs were being erected by the Association on the Inchbonnie and Rotomanu to Greymouth roads. Tho secretary reported that the Kumara Junction-Flowery, Creek road was now 9pen for motorists-as: far as Chesterfield.. . Technical School. 4 The breaking-up ceremony of the Greymouth Tebhnical High School took place on Friday afternoon, the chairman (Mr T. E. Coates) presiding at the prize-giving. The dux medal was awarded to Iris Burrell. ,
