ASHBURTON. INFECTIOUS DISEASES. The suspected ease of diphtheria which was reported in the borough on Monday has proved positive, while two further cases have been reported in the county, one being from Walnut avenue and the other from Tniwald. Yesterday a -case of scarlet fever from Allenton and a case of typhoid fever from Methven were notified to the County Health Inspector (Mr E, N. Johnson). Colonel F. W. W. Dawson, of the Health Department, Christchurch, visited Ashburton in connexion with the outbreak of diphtheria, which necessitated the closing of the Convent School. • rreabytery. At the monthly meeting of the Presbytery, held yesterday, the Moderator, the Rev. A. D. Kirkland Mayfield) presided. The clerk (the fiev. W. Marshall) submitted an itinerary of the visit of Sister Annie to all congregations in the Presbytery shortly after the meeting of the General Assembly in March. It was decided to submit the itinerary to the Maori Mission Committee for itß approval. Balance-sheets were received from the Home Mission Stations and aided congregations, and it was agreed to support the application to the Home Mission Committee for grants ranging from £3O to £7O. The Eevs. A. D. Kirkland, A. S. Morrison, and W. Marshall were appointed ministerial representatives to the General Assembly meetingjat Christchurch. It was decided to ask the congregations of St. Andrew's and Methven to appoint representative elders. A commission, consisting of the Eevs. E. Morgan, A. S. Morrison, and W. Marshall, together with their elders, was set up to receive the report of the triennial visitation of the St. Andrew's Church, and to approve of the general and financial. statistics of the Presbytery. Alleged Theft of Bicycle. Alexander Ferris, aged 20 years, a labourer, appeared before Mr G. "W. Andrews, J.P., at the Magistrate's Court yesterday morning, charged with having stolen a bicycle at Christchurch on December sth, the property of a person unknown. He was remanded to appear at Christchurch to-morrow. Lodges. There wasf a large attendance of Druids at the half-yearly meeting of the Star of Ashburton Lodge, U.A.0.D,, on Monday night, visitors including Sisters from the Success of Ashburton Lodge, and brothers from the Lily of Temuka Lodge. The District President, Sister E. Crum, was in attendance, and also P.D.P. Bro. J. Fisher and P.S. Bro. J. Denison, of the Temuka Lodge, and P. A. Bro. A. Thomson, of the Hope of St. Albans Lodge. Bro. J. W. Bostock presided and welcomed the visiting brothers and sisters. The installation of the Success of Ashburton officers was carried "out, the following officers being installed:— A.D., Sister J. Collett; V.A., Sister T. Eyles; secretary, Sister E. J. ' The installing officer was the District President, Sister Crum, and Bro. S. L „ acting as Master of Ceremonies. The Court Ashburton No. 6729, A.O.F. met on Monday evening, when the C.r!' Bro. C. J. Bax, presided. Votes of sympathy were passed with the relatives of the late Bro. J. Clayton and with Bros. W. and P. Thompson in the loss of their father. The resignation of Dr. J. J. Crawshaw as a medical officer was accepted. It was reported that the chemists in Ashburton were closed on Sunday mornings and it was decided to endeavour to arrange for the United Friendly Societies' Dispensary to be open. Bro. It. W. Crowther gave notice to move at the next meeting that the Court affiliate, with the United Friendly Societies' Benevolent Association of Can-
terbury. Nominations were opened for officers for the ensuing term. It was stated that the district officers would pay An official visit to the quarterly meeting of the Lodge on December 21st. Four candidates were proposed. High School Board. At the monthly meeting of the High School Board held yesterday, there were present: —Messrs W. T. Lill (in tho chair), E. H. Orr, M. Bruce, A. Brown, F. Frampton, and A. Lane. The financial statement showed that there was a credit balance of £338 4s 6d. Mr E. A. Cockroft (headmaster) re.ported that the roll number was 122 boys and 99 girls. The break-up would be held to-morrow night, when the chief speaker would be I)r. G. M. L. Lester, of Christchurch. Senior free places were granted by recommendation to 45 second-year pupils, while seven had their junior free places extended for another year. Those numbers showed a small percentage increase on those of . last year. Fifteen senior pupils received their higher-leaving certificates. Since the last Board meeting another line of 52 ewes and 56 lambs had been added to the flock on the School farm, faking a total of 104 ewes.and 106 lambs. All the sheep were •shorn, by the boys, Allenton School Committee. At the last meeting of the Allenton School Committee the chairman, Mr E, C. Bathiirst, presided. The headmaster reported the roll number was 261, with an average attendance of 251. The proficiency examination had been held, but the results were not yet available. The term examinations were also completed. It was decided to .hold the breakup ceremony on Friday, December 18th. The question of holding a school picnic was held over till the February meeting of the Committee. Longbeach Road Board. The monthly meeting of the Longbeach Road Board was held yesterday. Present: Messrs J. P. McQuilkih (chairman), L. Maginness, H. Watts, A. Moore, and W. J. Anderson. The District Highways Council wrote requesting particulars regarding the subsidy of 2s 6d in the £ on rates, on the average of the three years' payments to March 31st, 1930. The bank pass-book showed a credit ox £46 8s lid.
