Two Absentees. Gay Crest was withdrawn yesterday from to-day's Akaroa Handicap. He was accepted for in case anything prevented him from having the two races tie-' sired for him at Trentham, and as he had a strenuous effort in each, it was I not considered necessary to give him : another task in public prior to the New • Zealand Cup. He showed considerable improvement in filling third place/ in a mile journey on the second day, and' a* bis condition suggested, he was in need of racing, he will have to be considered in the Akafroa Handicap to-day. Jaloux waß narrowly beaten into third .place in the event twelve months ago with 7-13 on his back. 1 . |7pt b9 ■ • Eanielagh's track capabilities would riiake him a favourable proposition for the Ak.araa Handicap to-day, but unfoft'uniately he invariably fails to reproduce hit form in company. He had every chance to make good in the Timaru Cup earlier in the month, but " did not see out the journey, and was beaten by' Mount Boa and Admiral Drake. With this pair not engaged today, Ranelagh-s admirers may not feel inclined to allow him to run against them'in spite of his many disappoint- ■ ments in the past few months. An Oaks Candidate. The three-year-old filly Azalea, by Cbief Buler from Baylock, who cost Mr Or. D P Grcnewood 550 guinea? as a year- • ling, will make her reappearance in \tbe Okain's Trial Stakes "at Motaukarara to-day. She was raced six times last season, her best performance being a. third placing to Zeebrugge and Belvoir in the Novice Stakes at the Am*-berley-Hororata combined Meeting at Riccarton in May lpst. attach to her effort to-day in view of her future racing, which includes an engagement in the New Zealand Oaks Stakes. May Effect a Surprise. Tea Garden, one of the many maiden performers in the Okain's Trial Stakes to-day, is a three-year-old gelding by Tea Tray from Gardenia, and is trained by T. H. Gillett for Mr E. Hay, who purchased him as a yearling at Trenthara for 75 guineas. He has yet to appear in public but his track work has been impressive, and like all the progeny of Tea Tray he is endowed with a marked turn of speed. In addition, he has shown signs- of being a smart beginner, and track-watchers would not be surprised to see him making a promising showing .over live furlongs today. At Carterton To-day. The annual race Meeting of the Carterton Racing Club will be held to-day. The following horses should race prominently:—Novice Stakes: St. Roger, Shootist, Foulwindj High-Weight Handicap: Retract, Appledore, Cluny; Wairarapa County Cup: Fitzquex, Ephialtes, Spearful; Carterton Hack Handicap: Emotion, Tripping, Eminent; Bunny Memorial Handicap: Kozan, Tobaccoland; Taratahi Hack Handicap, Ben Hur, Joie de Val, cPohneen; Maungaraki Handicap: Atholspear, Royal Routine, Imateagirl; Electric Hack Handicap: Lady Ronald, Acis, Projection. Aristocratic Blood. While Phar Lap will be in evidence at Flemington to-day his relatives Fortune's Wheel and Nightguard will be racing at the Banks Peninsula Meeting. The former is engaged in the Highweight Handicap, and as she has shown considerable improvement lately in her work, culminating in a good gallop over seven furlongs on Thursday, her prospects will not be overlooked. Nightguard, who has at last been placed on his right mark, the minimum, will con-ti-at the Le Bops Handicap. He, too, h«xß shown encouraging track form, but investors will not be tempted to show much confidence in him until he has displayed more ability in a race than has been the case in his limited opportunities to date. Flemington Meeting Opens To-day. The Victoria Racing Club's Spring Meeting will open at Flemington today. Six events are carded as follows, with the names of New Zealand-owned and bred horses nominated appearing in parentheses: —Maiden Plate, of 300 sovs, one mile (Oratorian); Maribyrnong Plate, of 1500 sovs, for two-year-olds, five furlongs; Melbourne Stakes, of 750 sovs, weight for age, one mile and a quarter (Chide 9-1, Concentrate 9-1, Glare 9-1, Phar Lap 9-1, Waterline 9-1, Veilmond 9-0); Victoria Derby, of 5000 sovs, one mile and a half (Ammon Ra); Cantala Stakes, of 1500 sovs, one mile; Hotham Handicap, of 400 sovs, one mile and a half (Glare, Waterline, Second Wind, Star God, First Acre, Stately). Horses which will be bracketed on the totalisator at the Banks Peninsula Meeting to-dajyare as follows: —Duvauchelle Handicap: Wainoni and Le Fashion; Little River Handicap: Hard Words and Mauser, Wild Guy and Neil Dillon. Useful Work. Silver Bingen, Kelp, and Denver Jack were among the few horses worked at Addington yesterday morning and all acquitted themselves well while covering a mile and a half under restraint. Remained in Auckland. . The Wellington trotting trainer, L. O. Thomas, has left his pacer, Genuine, in ;Auckland, to be prepared by S. M. August, for the Auckland Christmas Meeting. Thomas stated on Monday that Genuine was a disappointing horse away from home, and was a very bad traveller. While being trained' for the Auckland Spring Meeting he put up some very fine trials, which indicated reasonable'chances of success- After his indifferent displays, Thomas decided to give bin? a chance to prove his real worth, by having him trained where travelling to a Meeting would be eliminated. Genuine has, on occasions, shown good form at Epsom, particularly over sjiort courses. . Auckland Disqualification.

The year's disqualification imposed on Ngingongingo and his. driver, Andrew Bryce, after winning the Labour Day Handicap at Epsom on Monday, is being discussed with keen interest in trotting circles. It is. just eight years since the last similar incident occurred at Epsom, says the "New Zealand Herald." This was on October 24th, 1923, when the aged mare Andes, which had run unplaced on the first dayi won the Ellerslie Trot Handicap. She was disqualified for inconsistent running, and the race was awarded to Jenny Wallace, with Rlsa Nore second, and Great Applause third, * The rules of trotting provide that in the case of an appeal from the judgment of the stewards given • op the course, notice of. appeal in writing must be lodged with the searetary of the club

within ton minutes of the judgment being given, and the sum of £lO deposited with the secretary to be forfeited to the New Zealand Trotting Association if the appeal is not sustained, except by special leave of the Association. These formalities were complied with by Bryce. * The next step is for the Association to deal with the appeal. Its headquarters are in Christchurch, and its next meeting is fixed for Tuesday, November 10th, so that in all probability tho appeal will be taken then. If the president of the Association so directs a special meeting may be held within 14 days of an appeal being lodged with it, but owing to the distance which several members have to travel, it is unlikely that this course will be followed on this occasion. The Association has power to grant the appeal or uphold or vary the judgment. There is the right of further appeal to the New Zealand Trotting Conference by either party. Until finality is reached payment of the stakemoney is withheld.

meeting at motukarara. TO-DAY'S PROGBAMMk The Banks Peninsula Eacing Club's Spring Meeting, to be held on the Motukarara racecourse to-day, gives every indication of attracting an Imusually large assemblage of racegoers. Interest will be added to the programme by the fact that the big majority of the horses will be figuring in the various contests at the New Zealand Cup Meeting opening a week later, and these include several of the Cup candidates. The cqurse benefited considerably by recent rain, and the good going generally provided by the Motukarara track will again be in evidence. A special passenger train will leave Christchurch at 11.15 a.m., stopping at intervening stations, and is timed to leave Motukarara at 6 p.m., arriving in the City at 7.1 p.m. The programme is as follows: 1 p.m.— OKAIN'S TRIAL STAKES, Of 85 govs. Weight 8-0 (no allowances). TROTTING HANDICAPS. TO THE IDITOa 0* THE Pa*M. Surely the handicappers ought to be able to* de. elare the re-handicaps immediately after a meeting, according to the rules for the new system.—Yours, etc., 4.31 October 80th, 1981, AUCKLAND T.C> r • .
